Phumtham Unaware of Jakrapob’s Appointment as Government Spokesman

Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Phumtham Vejjayachai, who is currently acting as Prime Minister, has stated that he has no knowledge of Jakrapob Penkair being appointed as the new government spokesman, replacing Chirayu Huangsap. He acknowledged Jakrapob's capabilities but emphasized the importance of verifying qualifications for every position.

According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham mentioned that if a change in the spokesperson position is necessary, it will occur; otherwise, it will not. He could not confirm if the change was intended to enhance communication with foreign countries due to his lack of awareness about the appointment.

When questioned about who would decide on Jakrapob's appointment, Phumtham explained that he had not yet met with Jakrapob due to his busy schedule. However, he personally regarded Jakrapob as a competent individual with a solid background, having previously served as a civil servant in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as a government spokesperson. He noted that the decision would ultimately depend on what is deemed suitable.

Concerns were raised about Jakrapob's qualifications and whether his appointment might echo the situation involving Pichit Chuenban, a former Minister of the Prime Minister's Office, due to Jakrapob's past issues. Phumtham responded that the Cabinet Secretary would be responsible for any investigations and clarified that every political position undergoes scrutiny to ensure compliance with various levels and qualifications.
