Phumtham Highlights Smooth Thai-Cambodian Relations Ahead of Key Defense Meeting

Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai has indicated that relations between Thailand and Cambodia are currently without issues, as Thailand prepares to host the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting with Cambodia in May.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham, who is actively involved in diplomatic preparations, noted that the Prime Minister's upcoming trip to Cambodia is in response to an invitation from the Cambodian government. Although Mr. Phumtham was initially set to accompany the Prime Minister, he will remain in Thailand to fulfill duties assigned by the Prime Minister during the visit.

Further developments include the anticipated attendance of Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense at the GBC meeting in Thailand. This meeting is expected to provide a platform for discussions on various topics of mutual interest, contingent on the agenda set by both nations.

Mr. Phumtham reassured that past dialogues between military leaders of the two countries have been positive, indicating that there is no cause for concern. The border situation, particularly at the Prasat Ta Muen Thom area, may be a point of discussion based on the countries' assessments. Current reports from army commanders suggest that operational-level interactions at the border remain cordial, with routine visits continuing as usual. Nonetheless, national defense matters are independently managed by each country.
