Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has emphasized the necessity of adhering to peaceful methods in resolving the Thai-Cambodian conflict. He stressed avoiding violence and prioritizing the preservation of life and minimizing loss, while also preparing military forces to uphold Thailand's sovereignty.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham reiterated Thailand's commitment to a peaceful solution, highlighting past efforts to negotiate and maintain peace along the border. Coordination with the army, Ministry of Defense, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been ongoing to ensure preparedness and sovereignty protection without any deficiencies in military readiness.
Mr. Phumtham confirmed that discussions have been continuous among the relevant ministries to unify efforts in addressing the border issues. He noted that violent measures or war would only be considered as a last resort if the crisis cannot be resolved through negotiation. The 2000 Memorandum of Understanding and the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) mechanism are being utilized to mitigate the situation.
Addressing the border closure, Mr. Phumtham clarified there were no orders to close or open the border arbitrarily. Decisions regarding the border are sensitive and require consensus among all parties involved. He assured that all decisions are made with national sovereignty and public interest in mind, rather than benefiting any individual or group.
Mr. Phumtham expressed confidence in the unity of the Thai response and reiterated that war would only be a last resort. He stressed the importance of reason and necessity over emotions, acknowledging the potential loss of life and urging avoidance of conflict wherever possible.
In response to Cambodia's intention to bring the Emerald Triangle claim area to the International Court of Justice, Mr. Phumtham stated that negotiations should focus on factual evidence rather than emotions or individual feelings. He emphasized the importance of fact-based dialogue to resolve the matter effectively.
