Phumtham Addresses Cambodian Border Dispute and Hun Sen’s Military Role

Bangkok: "Phumtham" has indicated that the Cambodian border dispute has significantly calmed down.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, addressed the appointment of Samdech Hun Sen as Chief of Staff of the Cambodian Armed Forces. This development has raised questions regarding potential tension in the border area. Mr. Phumtham expressed that the situation is being carefully monitored and analyzed, emphasizing that circumstances can change rapidly and should not be overly speculated upon.

Mr. Phumtham refrained from commenting directly on Hun Sen's new role, suggesting that the media should conduct their investigations. During a Defense Council meeting, the current state of the Thai-Cambodian border was assessed, concluding that the situation has calmed down considerably. The government aims to resolve the issue peacefully through bilateral mechanisms and has not considered closing all borders to avoid impacting border communities, adhering to humanitarian principles.

Regarding the sensitive area of Ta Muen Thom temple, Mr. Phumtham clarified that the situation remains unchanged. He addressed allegations made by Mr. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, a former Election Commission member, about permitting Cambodian soldiers access to the temple, categorically denying any such actions. He urged Mr. Somchai to provide evidence if available and expressed his willingness to discuss the matter openly without pursuing legal action. Mr. Phumtham emphasized the importance of factual criticism and his readiness to clarify public misconceptions as a politician.

In response to questions about the investigation into the assassination of a former Cambodian opposition leader in Thailand, Mr. Phumtham acknowledged the ongoing efforts. He explained that the investigation involves complex international political dynamics, which requires time and cooperation, as it cannot be conducted unilaterally within another country.
