Pheu Thai Declines Opposition Whip Role, Cites Different Intentions

Bangkok: Suang has reiterated that Pheu Thai will not send any representatives to join the opposition whip, emphasizing different intentions and dismissing any complaints.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sorawong Thienthong, MP for Sa Kaeo and Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai Party, in an interview addressed the party's decision not to participate in the opposition whip. This decision comes despite Mr. Pakornwut Udompipatsakul, a party-list MP for the Prachachon Party and chairman of the House of Representatives' Coordinating Committee for the Joint Opposition Parties, urging Pheu Thai to reconsider. Sorawong highlighted that internal discussions within Pheu Thai led to the resolution not to appoint any opposition whip, stressing that this was not influenced by egos but by differing party intentions.

Mr. Sorawong further clarified that Mr. Pakornwut's comments about senior members of the Pheu Thai Party putting aside their egos were unrelated to the party's leadership. He emphasized that the reluctance to join as opposition whips stemmed from generational consensus, with party members preferring to focus on parliamentary efforts that benefit the public. He reiterated that while Pheu Thai is open to cooperating on beneficial legislation, their differing intentions prevent them from joining the opposition whip.

When questioned about potential coordination with the Prachachon Party on important legislation, Mr. Sorawong confirmed Pheu Thai's readiness to support beneficial initiatives, ensuring their presence and participation in parliamentary quorums. He reassured that party discussions concluded with a firm stance against appointing an official opposition whip.

Looking ahead, if a no-confidence motion arises, Mr. Sorawong assured that coordination with the Prachachon Party would not be problematic. He emphasized that Pheu Thai Party representatives would maintain dialogue with the Prachachon Party while upholding their clear position of not supporting the government. Pheu Thai aims to function as a dedicated opposition party, maintaining their distinct intentions and ensuring effective parliamentary work without complaints.
