People’s Party Pushes for Constitutional Amendment as Parties Urged to Submit Drafts

Bangkok: The People's Party has taken a significant step forward by submitting a draft amendment to Chapter 15 of the Constitution, urging other political parties to follow suit within the week. The move aims to engage all parties in the constitutional amendment process, emphasizing the role of the Constituent Assembly as the most connected to the people.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Natthaphong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party, together with Mr. Parit Wacharasindhu, the party spokesman and MPs, formally submitted their draft amendment to Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, President of the National Assembly. Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor indicated that the draft would undergo a legal review before being discussed with the party whips to be included on the agenda for consideration.

The draft amendment, as detailed by the People's Party, proposes two mechanisms to enhance public involvement in drafting a new constitution. These include a 35-member Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) and a 100-member Constitution Drafting Advisory Council. Both bodies aim to ensure public participation and transparency in the drafting process over a nine-month period.

The submission also outlines a roadmap, including a first round of referendums and subsequent parliamentary approvals, to ensure the draft's alignment with public opinion and constitutional requirements. Mr. Natthaphong stressed the importance of the Prime Minister's engagement with MPs and Senators to expedite the amendment process, with the first reading of amendments slated for early October.

The People's Party has set clear expectations for other parties, particularly the Pheu Thai and Bhumjaithai, to submit their drafts promptly and ensure they align with the Constitutional Court's ruling. Mr. Natthaphong also highlighted ongoing discussions with other parties to facilitate a smooth constitutional amendment process.

In response to media inquiries, Mr. Natthaphong expressed confidence in the Bhumjaithai Party's commitment to the amendment process, suggesting potential future collaborations depending on the government's performance. The People's Party remains focused on ensuring the constitutional amendment process is inclusive and reflective of the people's will, with Mr. Natthaphong emphasizing the need for the Prime Minister to lead discussions to achieve this goal within the stipulated timeframe.
