NACC Committee to Probe State Audit Office Building Collapse

Bangkok: The NACC Committee is set to invite key figures, including the Governor of the State Audit Office, the Permanent Secretary of Industry, and the Council of Engineers, to explain the circumstances surrounding the collapse of the State Audit Office building.

According to Thai News Agency, the building, which was under the responsibility of the State Audit Office, collapsed following a severe earthquake on April 10, resulting in the deaths of several workers. Rescue operations are ongoing to locate and save those still trapped under the debris, with hopes for more survivors.

The Office of the Auditor General's new building was approved with a budget exceeding 2 billion baht in 2020 and was intended for completion in 2023. However, the construction has already surpassed the budget timeline by over a year. Questions have arisen about why such an expensive project could not withstand the earthquake. It was revealed that the construction was managed by a joint venture between a Chinese and a Thai investment group. On April 1st, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand urged the Chinese company involved to fully cooperate with the Thai government's investigation.

The NACC Committee aims to ensure a thorough investigation, with both legislative and executive branches working together for a fair and transparent inquiry. On April 10, the Committee will seek explanations from the Auditor General regarding accountability for the deceased, supervision, and budget responsibility. The Council of Engineers will discuss the construction materials, technology, and potential causes of the collapse, while the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry will address procurement processes, construction standards, and materials used.

These investigations are intended to serve as lessons for future government construction projects, ensuring higher standards and better oversight.
