Monk’s Marijuana Use Leads to Scandal and Assault in Prachin Buri

Prachin Buri: Another controversy emerged involving a monk in Prachin Buri Province, where Luang Ta Tum resorted to using marijuana, claiming it enhanced his focus during meditation, and subsequently engaged in a spree of slapping his disciples.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred at a temple in Nong Phrong Subdistrict, Si Maha Phot District. The police found Luang Ta Tum at a gas station after being informed about an abandonment by his disciple, Mr. Jeab, and a fellow monk, Luang Ta Maen. Upon being returned to the temple, Luang Ta Tum immediately assaulted Mr. Jeab.

The police, prompted by dissatisfaction among villagers and a request from the Sangha, inspected the temple and discovered marijuana in Luang Ta Tum's quarters. The monk admitted to using it regularly for mood enhancement and concentration. Additionally, a search of his pickup truck revealed a significant amount of marijuana, which he claimed was delivered by a child for a nominal fee. Luang Ta Tum later apologized for the assault and agreed to disrobe, after which he was taken to the police station.

Mr. Jeab, who was attacked by Luang Ta Tum, stated that he often drove for the monk without receiving payment and that the monk frequently smoked marijuana in the car. The altercation began when Mr. Tum instructed Mr. Jeab to buy spray paint, which turned out to be just water mist, leading to a prolonged wait and eventual abandonment at the gas station.

In a recent development, Mr. Narin, formerly known as Luang Ta Tum, was involved in a vehicle accident on Prachin-Sri Maha Phot Road. His pickup truck veered off the road, resulting in injuries. He was assisted by officials and taken to a hospital. Witnesses reported that Mr. Narin, in a dazed state, mentioned plans to ordain in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, revealing his identity as the recently disrobed monk.
