Ministry of Agriculture Moves to Open Markets in Indonesia and the Philippines

Bangkok: The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has announced significant progress in trade negotiations with Indonesia and the Philippines, aimed at expanding Thailand's export markets for agricultural products. According to Thai News Agency, Minister Assoc. Prof. Dr. Narumon Pinyosinwat revealed that discussions led by the Department of Livestock Development have resulted in an agreement with Indonesia to commence exports of live native chickens, with the first shipment expected in April. Minister Narumon assigned Mr. Somchuan Ratanamangalanon, Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development, to engage in negotiations with Dr. drh. Agung Suganda, Director-General of the Indonesian Department of Livestock Development and Animal Health Services (DGLASH). Their discussions in Jakarta focused on strengthening bilateral relations in livestock production and academic collaboration to control animal epidemics. Veterinarian Somchuan reported progress on the request to export native chickens (A yam Bangkok) to Indonesia. Both parties agreed on the draft Veterinary Health Certificate (VHC) proposed by the DGLASH. Following the approval, the DGLASH will register Thai native chicken exporters, enabling immediate exports once the announcement is made. The initial export is anticipated in April, potentially generating substantial income for Thai farmers. This agreement is expected to boost income for Thai native chicken farmers and enhance the country's reputation in the industry. An estimated 12,000 live native chickens are projected to be exported annually to Indonesia, valued at no less than 300 million baht. Moreover, DGLAHS has shown interest in collaborating with Thailand on compartmentalization and academic exchanges, particularly concerning Foot and Mouth Disease. Indonesia also expressed a need for beef and dairy cattle products, inviting Thai investors to explore opportunities. In 2024, Thailand's livestock exports to Indonesia amounted to 4.6 billion baht, with pet food and dairy products a s key exports demonstrating growth. Minister Narumon also discussed with HE Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr., Secretary of the Philippine Department of Agriculture, the acceleration of amendments to the Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Cooperation between Thailand and the Philippines. The aim is to expand agricultural cooperation and integrate current technologies. Thailand seeks to open the agricultural market for poultry and fresh longan to the Philippines. The Philippines is considering these products and has shown interest in importing more to meet the demands of its growing population, including rice and pork. The Philippines ranks as Thailand's 15th largest agricultural trading partner from 2022 to 2024, contributing 1.87 percent to Thailand's agricultural trade value globally. Major exports include sugar, rice, pet food, sauces, seasonings, and cassava starch.
