Bangkok: Mallika Jiraphanwanich, Deputy Minister of Transport, recently visited the Southern Bus Terminal on Borommaratchachonnani Road, urging the Transport Company Limited (BKS) to ensure adequate preparations for the upcoming 2026 New Year's festival. Her visit aimed to inspect the operations of BKS and evaluate the public convenience provisions at this crucial transportation hub.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Mallika emphasized the importance of facilitating public transportation at the Southern Bus Terminal, a key connection point between Bangkok and the surrounding provinces and regions. With the New Year's holiday expected to witness a surge in travelers returning to their hometowns and embarking on trips, she stressed the need for readiness in terms of buses and drivers.
The inspection covered various facilities, including ticket booths, platforms for large buses, and waiting areas. The visit also extended to joint-venture bus operators, minibus and van ticket sales points, and alcohol screening points for drivers. BKS was instructed to ensure that all operations comply with safety measures and that buses and drivers are adequately prepared for service. This initiative aligns with government and Ministry of Transport policies to maintain high standards in Thailand's public transport system.
The visit also included an inspection of the BMTA shuttle bus service on the Southern Bus Terminal to Sanam Luang route. This service facilitates public visits to pay respects to the royal remains of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother. Data indicates that 100-200 people utilize this service daily, with over 60-70 trips per day. With buses departing every 12-15 minutes, the BMTA operates five shuttle buses from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with the last departure from Sanam Luang at 9:30 PM.
Mr. Atthavit Rakjamroon, Managing Director of BKS, reported a consistent flow of over 4,000 passengers daily at the Southern Bus Terminal, with over 450 trips per day. The company has effectively managed its fleet to meet passenger demand, ensuring no travelers are left behind.
The Transport Company Limited and bus operators have been directed to enhance their preparations for the 2026 New Year's holiday, with a focus on safety and readiness to ensure a smooth travel experience for the public.
