Lion Attack at Zoo Sparks Investigation and Safety Review

Bangkok: Six men from the Dong Hawk Special Operations Unit inspected the wild animal zone where a lion attacked and killed a zoo employee. Police have already interviewed three or four witnesses.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thani Wongnak, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Division of the Wildlife Conservation Office, stated that officials will focus on inspecting cages and habitats and reviewing zoo officials' emergency response plans. This information will be used to analyze and improve the zoo's safety measures, which may include prosecution measures for those involved following the incident. The zoo currently remains closed in the wild animal zone and Safari Park, which cover approximately 200 rai of the zoo's total 470 rai.

A preliminary investigation has identified potential issues at the zoo requiring attention, such as the installation of cameras on all staff vehicles to record activities in the wild animal zone, the addition of steel barriers, and the implementation of more stringent protective gear requirements for staff.

Police Colonel Nirutphon Yothamart, Superintendent of the Kannayao Metropolitan Police Station, reported progress in the investigation of the lion attack. Investigators have interviewed employees who worked closely with the deceased and their supervisors, with further questioning planned. All individuals involved, primarily zoo employees, will be summoned for additional questioning. The case will also seek guidance from relevant agencies, such as the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

Investigators have collected evidence at the scene and are conducting a thorough examination to determine the true cause of Mr. Jian's death. While the absence of CCTV cameras recording the incident presents a challenge, investigators are continuing their efforts. It is not yet clear who will be prosecuted or what charges may be filed, as the investigation is ongoing.
