Ice Factories Urged to Prevent Ammonia Gas Leaks Amid Rising Summer Demand

Bangkok: "Kham" has issued a warning to the public to be vigilant about their health and advised ice factory operators to prevent ammonia gas leaks during the hot summer months. In preparation for potential emergencies, an environmental health operation team is on standby to respond swiftly. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Karom Polpornklang, Deputy Government Spokesperson, highlighted the increased demand for ice due to the scorching weather, leading to a surge in production efforts by ice-making businesses. This rush often results in ammonia gas leaks, posing risks to nearby residents. To mitigate these risks, the Department of Health has mobilized the Environmental Health Operation Team to collaborate with provincial public health offices and local administrative organizations. Their mission is to enforce public health laws and implement control measures to prevent ammonia gas leaks, thereby safeguarding public health. Local administrative organizations, responsible for authorizing ice production oper ations, have been tasked with enforcing emergency control measures to prevent ammonia gas leaks. These measures include daily inspections of production tools, machinery, and equipment to ensure they remain in optimal condition. Any abnormalities must be promptly addressed and reported to local authorities. Additionally, ice factories are required to inspect ammonia gas pipelines, gas tanks, and related apparatus, ensuring they remain intact and functional. Safety systems must also be evaluated, including fire extinguishing mechanisms and emergency warning systems for employees. Regular assessments of wastewater treatment systems are necessary to ensure compliance with standards and readiness for potential ammonia gas leak emergencies. To further ensure preparedness, ice factories are encouraged to develop and practice emergency response plans, especially during periods of increased production in hot weather. This includes conducting evacuation drills and issuing timely warnings to both employees and surround ing communities. Mr. Karam emphasized the government's commitment to public health and safety, noting the operational team's readiness to implement environmental health guidelines in the event of chemical leaks, explosions, or fires. The team is equipped with measurement tools, materials, and field test kits to collaborate effectively with local agencies, ensuring swift and efficient responses to ammonia gas leaks from ice-making facilities.
