House of Representatives Approves Extension of Maternity Leave to 120 Days

Bangkok: The House of Representatives has approved a significant amendment to the Labor Protection Act, extending maternity leave to 120 days, aligning with the policy of equal labor protection and aiming to enhance opportunities for Thai workers.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pongkawin Juangroongruangkit, the Minister of Labor, expressed his congratulations to laborers following the House of Representatives' approval of the draft Labor Protection Act. The amendment increases the maternity leave entitlement for female employees from 98 days to 120 days. Employers are now required to pay for 60 days of this leave, and an additional 15 days of leave is available for mothers to care for their children if they are sick, at risk of complications, have abnormalities, or are disabled, with employers covering 50% of the wages during this period.

In addition to maternity leave, the revised act permits employees to take 15 days of leave to support their spouse following childbirth, exercisable within 90 days from the birth date. Employers are obligated to pay 100% of the wages during this leave period.

Mr. Pongkawin emphasized that these benefits align with the policy of providing equal protection for workers. The Ministry of Labor is committed to addressing the needs of all worker groups by introducing a new labor law aimed at integrating over 21 million informal workers into the legislative framework. The goal is to adapt to evolving work models and ensure that legal and social security systems are current.

Mr. Pongkawin concluded by highlighting the importance of maternity leave in improving the quality of life for workers and reiterated his commitment to advancing the Thai labor sector, enhancing productivity, and improving living standards for workers. He envisions the Ministry of Labor as a gateway for expanding opportunities for Thai workers.
