Heavy Rain Causes Flash Flooding in Chiang Mai Municipality

Chiang Mai: Heavy rain on Doi Suthep and in Chiang Mai city for hours caused flash floods to flow down streams and overflow drainage pipes, flooding the Sri Ping Muang and Kad Kom communities in Chiang Mai Municipality. Most residents are still worried that it will be like last year.

According to Thai News Agency, people are affected in a wide area, making it difficult for small cars to pass through the area. Many motorcycles have stalled, with water levels reaching 30 centimeters. Meanwhile, locals are asking for cooperation from drivers passing through the community to slow down because water waves are flooding into houses, damaging property. If possible, avoid the area and use other routes instead. The water level is still rising because the rain has not stopped, making travel on some routes difficult. In addition, there is flooding on many roads, waiting to be drained, causing people to be stranded at shops and restaurants along the road to avoid the rain. Currently, relevant agencies are working to solve the problem and drain the water. After about 2-3 hours, the water level should decrease.

The latest this morning, the water level has dropped back to normal. In some areas, there is still a little water on the road. The roads in the community are full of garbage and garbage bags floating with the flood. The garbage trucks of Chiang Mai Municipality are rushing to collect the garbage and garbage bags. However, most people are still worried about the flooding, afraid that it will be like last year.

While the contractor for the sand and sediment dredging in the Ping River brought the first sand dredger from Ang Thong Province to the Ping River, opposite the Nakhon Ping District Office in the Wang Sing Kham area of Chiang Mai Municipality, and is rushing to install the equipment and sand dredging pipes, it is expected that the sand dredging will start today because the area is shallow from the flooding last year. The dredging will start from Rattanakosin Bridge to Pa Daed Subdistrict, a distance of more than 11 kilometers, according to the plan to dredge the sand and sediment from the total distance of 41 kilometers to solve the flooding problem. The dredging will be 80 meters wide and 6.30 meters deep. The work period will be approximately 4-5 months, and a total of 21 sand dredgers will be used.
