Government Allocates 200 Million Baht for Earthquake Relief Efforts in Thailand

Bangkok: The Comptroller General's Department has sanctioned an extension of the government reserve fund, allocating 200 million baht to assist victims affected by the recent earthquake. This decision aligns with the Prime Minister's directive to provide urgent aid across all affected regions.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phasakorn Boonyalak, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, detailed the impact of the 8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, causing significant damage in Thailand. The earthquake, which was felt in 57 provinces, including Bangkok, has been classified as a Level 3 major disaster under the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Plan 2021-2027. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Minister of Interior, is overseeing the coordination of relief efforts.

The earthquake resulted in 138 aftershocks and caused damage across 14 provinces, with Bangkok experiencing the most severe effects, including 8 fatalities, 9 injuries, and 80 missing individuals. Structural damages include 89 houses, 36 buildings, and 14 construction projects, with two provinces declared as disaster areas: Pathum Thani and Phrae. Bangkok has been declared a full disaster relief area.

Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, has instructed relevant units to manage the situation and aid victims, with the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Center coordinating operations. Efforts include mobilizing resources for assistance, deploying search teams, and developing a cell broadcast system for timely public warnings.

The Ministry of Transport and related agencies are preparing for possible road closures, while the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation works to resolve debris issues at key locations. Building inspections are underway to ensure safety, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is communicating with tourists and foreign media for better understanding.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation is tasked with determining immediate relief measures. Mr. Phasakorn assured the public that while the situation is under control and aftershocks are decreasing, all efforts are focused on restoring normalcy swiftly. The disaster management level is expected to be downgraded soon, transitioning command to local governors.
