Bangkok: Thanin Kraivichien, former Prime Minister and Privy Councilor of King Rama IX, has passed away at the age of 97.
According to Thai News Agency, Professor Emeritus Thanin Kraivichien was a significant figure in Thai political history. Born on April 5, 1927, in Bangkok, he began his career as a lawyer, earning a law degree from Thammasat University and furthering his studies at the University of London. His career in the justice system saw him serve as a Supreme Court judge before he transitioned into politics.
On October 8, 1976, Thanin Kraivichien was appointed as the 14th Prime Minister of Thailand following the October 6, 1976 incident. His tenure was short-lived as a coup d'©tat led by General Kriangsak Chamanan ousted his government on October 20, 1977. Despite this, he remained influential in Thai politics and society.
After his term as Prime Minister, Thanin was appointed as a Privy Councilor to King Rama IX on December 15, 1977. He held this position for nearly four decades, contributing to the country's governance and maintaining an active role in its political landscape.
The religious ceremony for Professor Emeritus Thanin Kraivichien will include the royal bathing ceremony on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at Sala Bannaraphak, Benchamabophit Temple, marking the passing of a notable figure in Thailand's history.
