Former Abbot of Phichit Involved in Inappropriate Relationship with Ms. Golf

Phichit: Former Provincial Abbot of Phichit, Phra Thep Wachira Sitthimethi, is under scrutiny following revelations of an inappropriate relationship with a woman known as Ms. Golf. The case has raised concerns about violations of monastic discipline, leading to calls for the monk's disrobing.

According to Thai News Agency, the investigation began when officers from the Anti-Corruption Division seized the mobile phone of Ms. Golf, uncovering crucial information. The phone contained images and video clips that suggested violations of the monastic code by several high-ranking monks. Some monks involved have agreed to disrobe, while others, including Phra Thep Wachira Sitthimethi, have not yet complied.

On July 14, further investigations by the Crime Suppression Division police revealed evidence that could force Phra Thep Wachira Sitthimethi to disrobe. Chat data from the Line application showed exchanges between the former abbot and Ms. Golf, indicating a romantic relationship. The chats included expressions of longing and warnings to prevent the leak of images. Additionally, images showed the former abbot dressed in a T-shirt rather than traditional monastic robes, alongside a video call clip, highlighting behavior deemed inappropriate for a monk.

This case has sparked discussions on the enforcement of disciplinary standards within the monastic community and the implications for those found in violation.
