Floodwaters in Mae Sai Border Communities Begin to Recede, Prompting Repairs to Flood Barriers

Mae sai: Flooding in border communities in Mae Sai District has begun to recede, but flooding remains in low-lying areas, leaving behind a large amount of mud and debris. On the side of the First Sai River Friendship Bridge, water levels in the Sai River, which forms the Thai-Myanmar border, have dropped more than 40 centimeters below the bridge's bottom. This follows the water level at Ban Cho Ta Da in Myanmar, the upstream point, which has already fallen below the bank. Engineers are also working to place big bags at the gaps in the Sai River embankment near the bridge's neck to prevent further flooding. Meanwhile, the Thai-Myanmar border checkpoint in Mae Sai District, Tachileik side, is open for crossing as usual.

According to Thai News Agency, the floodwaters that inundated the Mae Sai border communities have receded in almost every area, but have left extensive damage. At Sai Lom Joy Market, a border market, shops are covered in mud. Vendors have begun cleaning up their stalls. Sai Pin, for example, said that yesterday's floodwaters were so strong that the temporary water barriers cracked. However, military engineers were able to block them and remove goods in advance, so the damage wasn't severe.

From a bird's-eye view of the communities on the right bank of the First Friendship Bridge, such as Koh Sai, Mai Lung Khon, and Mueang Daeng, flooding remains in some areas, such as the Koh Sai Intersection, a low-lying area. However, the situation is expected to improve gradually today.
