Election Commission Urged to Probe Alleged Vote-Buying in Nakhon Si Thammarat By-Election

Nakhon Si Thammarat: Political activist Mr. Sonthiya Sawasdee has formally requested the Election Commission to investigate alleged irregularities in the by-election for the Nakhon Si Thammarat MP, Constituency 8. His complaint centers around accusations of vote-buying and the distribution of 60 cows to influence voters.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sonthiya submitted additional documentation to support his claims, including video evidence showing speeches and seminars that allegedly violated election laws. He alleged that voters were bribed with 2,000 baht each, and that promises were made to secure votes, actions he claims undermine the integrity of the election. Mr. Sonthiya's complaint was initially directed to the Nakhon Si Thammarat Election Commission, which referred the matter to the central Election Commission for further review.

Mr. Sonthiya highlighted past incidents where Ms. Mukdawan Leungsinil of the Bhumjaithai Party received a red card from the Election Commission due to election fraud, leading to legal actions against Mr. Thepthai Senapong and others. He questioned whether the giving away of cows and vote-buying constitutes "new politics," as claimed by some political parties. He also referenced Mr. Chinnaworn Boonyakiat's Facebook post, suggesting significant financial investments by political parties in the election.

Mr. Sonthiya provided video clips from April 24-27, 2025, capturing the distribution of cows and speeches, which he believes demonstrate election law violations. He emphasized his role as an eligible voter in Constituency 8, expressing his desire for political reform that addresses core issues like low rubber prices rather than resorting to vote-buying tactics.

Despite reporters' inquiries, Mr. Sonthiya refrained from naming specific individuals or parties involved, citing legal concerns. He affirmed his commitment to ensuring democratic integrity in Nakhon Si Thammarat, advocating for sustainable political solutions rather than temporary incentives like cows and cash.
