Election Commission Summons 55 Senators for Clarification on Collusion Allegations

Bangkok: The Election Commission has revealed the names of 55 senators summoned to provide clarification on allegations of collusion in the selection process of senators, scheduled between May 19-21. The senators, divided into three groups, are to appear at the EC Office, Government Complex, Chaeng Watthana Road, Lak Si, Bangkok.

According to Thai News Agency, the summons were issued by the Central Investigation and Inquiry Committee, Group 26 of the EC Office, chaired by Pol. Lt. Col. Chanin Noi Lek, Deputy Secretary-General of the EC. The senators are suspected of violating the Organic Act on the Acquisition of Senators B.E. 2561, Section 70, in conjunction with other relevant sections. They are required to acknowledge and clarify the charges before the Investigation and Inquiry Committee.

The first group, consisting of 22 senators, is scheduled to appear on May 19, 2015. This group includes General Kriangkrai Srirak, Mr. Wirasak Wichitsangsri, and Mr. Mongkol Surachat among others. The second group, also comprising 22 senators, is set for May 20, 2015, and includes Mr. Suebsak Waewkaew and Pol. Lt. Col. Chatwat Saengphet. The final group of 11 senators, including Mr. Wirat Rakphan and Pol. Lt. Gen. Yuthana Thaiphakdi, will appear on May 21, 2015.

The Election Commission has clearly stated that failure to appear or clarify the allegations will be regarded as a waiver of the right to present evidence or provide a statement in defense.
