Election Commission Sets February 1 as Election Date for Provincial Administrative Organization Positions.

Bangkok: The Election Commission has greenlit the plan to conduct elections for members and presidents of the Provincial Administrative Organization on February 1 of next year. Applications for candidacy will be accepted from December 23 to December 27. Notably, 29 provinces will not hold elections due to early resignations of officials and are in the process of organizing new elections. According to Thai News Agency, the terms for current members and presidents, elected on December 20, 2020, are set to end on December 19, 2024. The Election Commission approved the draft plan for the upcoming elections, which includes the announcement of candidacy applications from December 23 to December 27, 2024, followed by the election on February 1, 2025. The Provincial Election Directors, with authority from the Election Commission, are responsible for announcing these dates. The Commission has urged prospective candidates to familiarize themselves with the application processes and necessary documentation through res ources available on the Election Commission's website or by contacting local Provincial Administrative Organizations, the Provincial Election Commission offices, the hotline service at 1444, or the Smart Vote application. Between June 23, 2022, and October 29, 2024, it was reported that Provincial Administrative Organization presidents in 29 provinces vacated their positions prematurely. In 27 provinces, officials resigned before their terms ended, including areas such as Sa Kaeo, Kanchanaburi, and Loei, among others. In Kalasin and Roi Et, the Court of Appeal Region 4 mandated new elections. Of these, 18 provinces have already conducted elections, with results announced in 16 provinces, while two await result declarations, and 11 provinces have pending elections.
