EGAT-Bhutan Enhance Clean Energy Cooperation for Regional Stability and Sustainability

Thimphu: EGAT-Bhutan reaffirmed their cooperation in developing clean energy and continuously exchanging knowledge in energy for over 20 years, and expanded their cooperation in energy transition.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), along with executives, engaged in knowledge exchange on energy with Bhutan. The discussions were led by HE Lyonpo Gem Tshering, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Bhutan, Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director of Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC), and Mr. Sonam Tobjey, CEO of Bhutan Power Corporation Limited (BPC). This meeting aimed to bolster sustainable energy development and took place from June 18-20 in Thimphu, Bhutan.

Mr. Thepparat Theppitak highlighted that the commitment between EGAT and Bhutan focuses on enhancing energy cooperation to achieve stability and sustainability. This initiative, which has spanned over two decades, involves the Joint Working Committee between EGAT and BPC. This committee, formed under a Memorandum of Understanding, met to devise plans for exchanging energy-related knowledge and experiences. Key focus areas included the construction and maintenance of high-voltage transmission systems and substations, as well as driving the energy transition. This transition covers electric vehicle (EV) charging station infrastructure and renewable energy technologies, which are essential for developing a sustainable regional energy system. Additionally, they are exploring new business opportunities with companies in the EGAT Group, such as investing in EV charging stations and developing new hydropower plants.

Furthermore, EGAT and DGPC have renewed a Memorandum of Understanding on hydrotechnical technology for the fifth time. This agreement emphasizes the exchange of knowledge and experience in hydropower, Bhutan's primary resource. It also includes training to enhance capacity and personnel exchange to boost operational efficiency and strengthen long-term energy security for both countries.
