Dusk Show: Dr. Kan Um, the New Generation Idol of Dr. Kan

Bangkok: Dusk Show introduces Dr. Kan Um, a folk musician who has transformed his childhood passion for the khaen into a thriving career. Starting from a mere hobby, Dr. Kan Um has become an influence on children interested in Isan musical instruments, achieving millions of views for his performances.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Kan Um, also known as Um Wimonrat Suwamat, is a 27-year-old musician with a significant online presence. With over 200,000 YouTube followers and 350,000 followers on his Mor Kan Um page, his video "Kalasin Girl Lam Plearn" has garnered more than 2.3 million views. This popularity has brought him widespread recognition and increased support, as he shares his journey from earning a teacher's degree to becoming a renowned musician.

Nong Aum, inspired by the sound of the khaen since the age of eight, began serious practice during her school years in Nakhon Phanom province, guided by Master Sombat Simla. She pursued her passion at Kalasin College of Dramatic Arts, specializing in folk music with a focus on the khaen.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic halted her plans to become a teacher, leading her to create YouTube content preserving folk music traditions. Her online presence grew as live performances ceased during the pandemic, drawing audiences to her virtual shows. Today, she continues to freelance, creating content and selling traditional musical instruments.

Dr. Kan Um's influence extends beyond content creation, as she collaborates with a folk music band and engages with younger generations. Her commitment to teaching and promoting folk music ensures that traditional sounds remain vibrant and accessible to new audiences.
