Bangkok: "Chusak" tells the opposition not to imagine "devil deals", reiterating that the government is sincere in political reform and amending the constitution, waiting for the court to decide how many times to hold a referendum, and waiting 180 days to amend the referendum law.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chusak Sirinil, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office, addressed accusations against the government regarding its sincerity in political reform and constitutional amendment. He emphasized the government's commitment to these critical issues, which hold significant importance for the administration.
Mr. Chusak further clarified the allegations of cross-party or "devil deals," stating his involvement since the last election, when the Move Forward Party emerged victorious. Despite being the second-largest party, they respected the results and supported the formation of the government. He noted that suggestions of a cross-party deal were unfounded and likely fabricated.
He highlighted that Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra announced a groundbreaking policy on political reform to the parliament on September 12, 2024. The policy outlines a response to eight societal challenges, focusing on political instability due to coups and political conflicts. The necessity for constitutional amendments is paramount to achieving meaningful political reform.
Mr. Chusak also discussed the complexities involved in drafting a new constitution, particularly in light of the Constitutional Court's ruling No. 4/2564. The ruling brought to light differing interpretations on how many times referendums should be held, given the existing constitution was established through a referendum. The government proposed amendments to include a new chapter on drafting a constitution, which led to a consensus on holding three referendums and amending the referendum law.
He concluded by stating that the government is committed to following the Constitutional Court's decision on the number of referendums required. The administration aims to finalize the constitutional amendments within the stipulated 180 days, demonstrating their genuine intent to establish a new constitution.
