Bangkok: Chulaphan Amornvivat has been confirmed as the new leader of the Pheu Thai Party, with a commitment to guide the party to success in the upcoming elections and initiate a comprehensive overhaul of its structure.
According to Thai News Agency, Chulaphan, a Member of Parliament for Chiang Mai, was elected during the Pheu Thai Party's extraordinary annual general meeting, receiving 354 votes out of 369, while 15 members abstained. The newly appointed party secretary-general is Prasert Chantarawongthong, with Suksit Srichomkhwan assuming the role of party spokesperson. The transition was marked by former leader Paethongtarn Shinawatra presenting flowers to Chulaphan and Prasert, followed by a photo session with the new executive committee.
Chulaphan expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him and the new executive committee, highlighting his pride in being part of the party since its Thai Rak Thai days, a journey spanning over 25 years. He acknowledged the challenges encountered, including political struggles, coups, and impeachments, but emphasized the party's resilience and resolve to continue fighting for the people's benefit.
Chulaphan noted that the party's foundation was built on faith and the belief that effective policies could address the people's needs. He stressed the necessity for the Pheu Thai Party to evolve in response to societal and political shifts, asserting that transformation is essential rather than optional.
The newly elected leader highlighted the importance of swift and direct communication with the public, selecting qualified electoral candidates, and reverting to popular policies that resonate with the people's needs. Chulaphan rallied the party members and supporters, urging them to unite and maintain faith in the Pheu Thai Party as it strives to secure electoral victory and steer Thailand toward a prosperous future.
Reporters detailed the composition of the party's executive committee, which includes several deputy party leaders, deputy secretaries, a treasurer, and a registrar. Additionally, Paethongtarn continues to play a significant role as the head of the Pheu Thai family, actively participating in the election campaign.
Following the election of the new executive committee, Chulaphan, alongside former ministers, MPs, and party members, paid their respects at the Grand Palace, signing a book of condolences for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.
