Chairman of Religious Affairs Committee Probes Scandal Involving Famous Monk and Laywoman

Bangkok: The chairman of the Religious Affairs Committee has launched an investigation into a scandal involving a 'famous monk' and a female layperson, amid concerns that the incident could undermine the faith of Buddhists across the nation. The committee's discussions also centered on the potential for allowing monks to marry and addressing issues related to female laypeople extorting money.

According to Thai News Agency, Mrs. Amon Srikongpan, Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Religion, Morality, Ethics, Arts and Culture, has announced that the Committee on Religion will convene a meeting next week to deliberate on the scandal involving royal monks at the Chao Khun level from various renowned temples and a woman known as "Ms. K". The committee plans to invite relevant agencies to provide clarifications or information, as the incident is seen as a significant issue impacting Buddhist faith nationwide.

Additionally, concerns have been raised about a proposal by a well-known lawyer to amend the law to permit monks to marry, with the aim of addressing problems of extortion and inappropriate behavior among monks. This proposal will also be discussed in the upcoming meeting.

Ms. Atcharaphan Homrot, Senator and Secretary of the Senate Committee on Religion, Morality, Ethics, Arts and Culture, emphasized the sensitivity of the issue, which involves senior monks and has led to a loss of faith among Buddhists. She highlighted the need for a strict and constructive approach to enforcing monastic discipline, particularly regarding the role of the Sangha Supreme Council and other supervisory bodies. The committee is committed to ensuring that no actions affect innocent monks, protecting those who uphold monastic values from being tainted by the scandal. The Committee on Religion is determined to implement concrete measures in collaboration with various sectors to maintain the stability of Buddhism.
