ASEAN-China Push for Economic Cooperation to Support Crackdown on Transnational Crimes

Bangkok: Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reveals that the ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting will promote economic cooperation and support the suppression of transnational crimes.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nikorndej Plangoon, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provided insights into the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting with China. During the meeting, four key issues were discussed. Notably, all member states expressed their excitement that China will sign the instrument of accession to the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty without reservations, marking China as the first country to do so. This significant step is anticipated to occur within the year.

Another major focus of the meeting was the reaffirmation of support for combating transnational crimes and human trafficking. Additionally, the meeting underscored the enhancement of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) 3.0 and the upcoming celebration of ASEAN-China relations.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman highlighted Thailand's initiatives at the ASEAN-China meeting, which include promoting a green economy between China and ASEAN and fostering increased people-to-people relations.

Regarding the tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump, Mr. Nikorndej noted that the issue was discussed, with all member countries agreeing on the necessity for ASEAN to collaboratively address the problem.

In bilateral discussions with Thailand's dialogue partners, three primary issues were highlighted. Thailand aims to advance digital economy cooperation, with the country leading negotiations to draft a digital economy framework agreement. The goal is to finalize this agreement within the year, thereby enhancing opportunities and income for the private and business sectors in ASEAN.

Furthermore, Thailand emphasized the resolution of various security threats, including drug issues, border conflicts, and smog concerns, garnering agreement from countries both within and outside ASEAN. Thailand also reiterated its commitment to sustainable development, tackling climate change, and promoting green development.
