Hanoi festival for innovative start-ups 2023 underway

A festival for innovative start-ups themed “Connecting the Capital Region – Creativity and Development”, or Techfest Hanoi, is underway in Hanoi from October 12-14.

First Vietnam Pho Festival 2023 held in Japan

The Vietnam Pho Festival 2023, the first of its kind, kicked off in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo on October 7, as part of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic ties.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Pham Quang Hieu said in recent years, the number of Japanese restaurants serving Vietnamese cuisine has been steadily increasing, with ‘Pho’ being one of the most ordered and increasingly popular dishes in Japan.

He said the two-day festival is the first of its kind in Japan to introduce Vietnamese cuisine, particularly Pho, a unique Vietnamese dish. It is also expected to further tighten people-to-people exchange and lasting friendship between Vietnam and Japan.

Tran Xuan Toan, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre newspaper and head of the organising board, said more than 50 food processors from southern provinces are also joining trade and investment promotion activities at this festival.

He added that it is also the first time a Pho festival has been held abroad.

In addition to directly introducing the flavours of Pho, the event also features various promotional activities for Pho, including rice noodle roll performances, a talk show called “Tinh yeu Pho Viet” (The Love for Vietnamese Pho) with the participation of artisans, experts and celebrities from both Vietnam and Japan, a competition for Japanese people to create Vietnamese Pho, and an exhibition and video screenings providing information and the history of the dish.

As part of the festival, a trade promotion event for over 110 Vietnamese and Japanese producers and traders of food and products derived from rice and starch was also held.

Bui Xuan Phai Awards honours filmmaker Dang Nhat Minh

People’s Artist director Dang Nhat Minh won the Grand Prize at the annual Bui Xuan Phai Awards ceremony held in Hanoi on October 5.

The Grand Prize is among the awards announced at the 16th Bui Xuan Phai – For the Love of Hanoi Awards by The Thao & Van Hoa (Culture & Sports) newspaper.

The awards, launched in 2008 by the newspaper and family of late painter Bui Xuan Phai -a founder of modern art in Vietnam and famous for his paintings of old Hanoi, aim to honour the contributions of individuals and organisations to Hanoi and their love for the capital city.

Born in Hue in 1938, Minh began making documentaries in 1965, with first work “Theo chan nhung nguoi dia chat” (On the Trails of Geologists).

Minh, former chairman of the Vietnam Cinema Association, was honoured with many domestic and international awards. He was conferred with the title of People’s Artist in 1993, granted the Ho Chi Minh Awards in 2007.

In 2022, he made the movie “Hoa nhai” (Jasmine) when he was 84 years old. In his films, there are imgages of Hanoi more or less, and he exploits many aspects, from the time to the people. Hanoi became an important part of his film career with works that truly feature Hanoi.

Director Dang Nhat Minh said that to him, Hanoi is his family member, and Hanoi has shaped the artist in him – a filmmaker for Hanoi because Hanoi is his love.

At the awards ceremony, three other awards were given, including The Work Prize; The Job Prize, and The Idea Prize.

The Work Prize was given to the book “Pho Hang Bot, chuyen “tam phao” ma nho” (Hang Bot street, gossip but remembered) by author Ho Cong Thiet (1952-2023) and the photo exhibition Hanoi Street 1985-2015: In the years of forgetting by Willian E. Crawford.

The Idea Prize was given to agencies including the Hanoi People’s Committee, and Hanoi Metropolitan University with an initiative to make Hanoi a subject in schools.

The Job Prize was given to the Hanoi Autumn Festival which was held for the first time from September 29 to October 1, aiming to promote the capital city’s destinations and tourism products and attract travelers to the city.

Addressing the event, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam News Agency Nguyen Thi Su said that the awards held for years have contributed to preserving, promoting, and cultivating the cultural values and Hanoian characteristics of the new era.

Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Ha Minh Hai said that not only the nominated authors and works but also many experts, scientists, cultural workers, and artists are working hard and silently because of their love for Hanoi. Vietnamese children around the world enjoy Mid-Autumn Festival

Various activities were held for Vietnamese children around the world on the occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival, a Vietnamese traditional festival that is celebrated annually on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, which falls on September 29 this year.

In Laos, the Nguyen Du Vietnam-Laos bilingual school held a programme on September 29 to celebrate the festival, gathering a large number of students and parents.

Also on September 29, the Vietnamese Embassy in South Africa held festive activities for Vietnamese children in the country and their local friends.

Ambassador Hoang Sy Cuong introduced the meaning of the Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnamese culture, especially for children.

In a fancy and cozy atmosphere, participants enjoyed Vietnamese mooncakes and joined folk games of Vietnam.

In Russia, the festival was held for children of officials working in the Vietnamese Embassy and other Vietnamese representative offices in Moscow.

At the event, winners of a drawing contest for children themed “Rusia in my eyes” were honoured.

Ambassador Dang Minh Khoi extended greetings to the children. He said that the prize-winning paintings will be printed in New Year postcards of the embassy to introduce the talent of Vietnamese children to international friends.

Festive activities were also organised for about 40 Vietnamese children at the Moscow trade centre which is hosting a large number of Vietnamese traders.

Meanwhile in Cambodia, children from Vietnamese-origin families in Sihanoukville gathered at the headquarters of the Khmer-Vietnamese Association in Preah Sihanouk province to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. The event was jointly organised by the association and the Vietnamese Consul General in Preah Sihanouk, with the sponsorship of many donors.

The organising board presented 50 gift packages to the children at the event.

Similar activities were also held in seven northwest provinces of Cambodia.

Earlier on September 28, the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia held a programme to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, with many festive festivals and folk games./.
