Cultural parks can support development of arts communities: ministry

The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry has said that cultural parks can support the development of individual creativity and innovation as well as cultural arts communities in Indonesia.

“Cultural parks are very important. They are an expression and discussion space for artists so that Indonesian culture becomes very rich, as it is based from the bottom, where local art lives,” the ministry’s director of film, music, and media Ahmad Mahendra said at the 2022 Media Arts Community Festival (FKSM) here on Thursday.

According to him, one of the efforts that cultural park managements can make to help communities is holding cultural arts festivals.

Mahendra said he wants cultural parks across Indonesia to keep organizing art festivals that can spotlight the diversity of the local culture and involve local communities to create and innovate more.

Local governments must develop cultural parks as a place for artists to gather, express, and create to produce cultural arts because cultural parks also have a role in preserving them, he explained.

Arts festivals can be a platform and forum to increase society’s role in introducing and developing local arts to make them more attractive and become high-value works, he said.

“We want them to grow from these cultural parks, like this (the 2022 Media Arts Community Festival),” he added.

The organization of the arts festival is inseparable from the support of cultural parks and local governments, he said.

Mahendra further said he expects that cooperation among the ministry, local governments, related agencies, cultural parks, cultural arts actors, and local communities can advance culture in various regions of Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Film, Music, and Media is also encouraging the holding of the Nusantara Traditional Music Festival to develop the country’s traditional music; Indonesian film festival; creation, recording, and performance of children’s songs; and the local narrative-based film screenwriting program (Indonesiana TV).

Film can be medium for discussing cultural differences: Ministry

Film is an appropriate learning medium to talk about and discuss cultural differences and tolerance, the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry’s cultural officer, Pandu Pradana, stated.

“The Muslim communities have become more misunderstood. These differences and misconceptions are cultural gaps that can be bridged through introducing the struggles, hopes, and the beauty of diverse Muslim communities around the world, one of which is through film festivals,” Pradana remarked here on Wednesday.

According to the officer, the discourse of diversity and tolerance aligns with the several issues related to Muslim communities in various parts of the world, both in countries where Muslims are the majority and minority.

“Meanwhile, there is a clear but forgotten fact that Muslim societies around the world have diverse cultural practices. Unfortunately, these societies are isolated from each other due to a number of factors, such as geography, politics, and economy,” he elaborated.

Hence, he stated that movies are frames of social reality to understand what is occurring in the world.

“Film festivals are an educational platform where people can see the colorful Islamic world,” he added.

Meanwhile, the ministry has put special emphasis on the issue of intolerance.

He explained that Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim had given special attention to the world of Indonesian education that faces major challenges, such as bullying, sexual violence, and intolerance.

“Not only does it hinder the realization of a good learning environment but these things also cause lasting trauma for children,” he stated.

According to Pradana, social issues in the education environment are still relevant and need to be voiced louder through several mediums, including cinema.

“One of the issues is intolerance that still occurs in schools. A school is a place where the identity and wealth of the nation are built,” he emphasized.

Fashion show, expo highlight 2022 National Batik Day

This year’s National Batik Day was much more festive with Batik Fashion Show on the longest catwalk which won the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI) award, as well as batik exhibitions in some places.

“At the opening ceremony, which is also the highlight of the National Batik Day event, it is enlivened with the Batik Street Fashion Show along Sudirman Street, starting exactly from the Senayan Roundabout and ending in front of the FX Mall. This activity will also be recorded by MURI as a Batik Fashion Show category with the Longest Catwalk in CFD at 600 meters,” the Chief Executive of the 2022 National Batik Day, Nini Djan Faridz, said in a press conference here on Sunday.

In addition, a 450-meter-long batik cloth was laid out on the railing on the 2nd floor of the lobby at the mall in the Sudirman area.

General Chairperson of the Indonesian Batik Foundation (YBI)–the organization that initiated this activity– Gita Pratama added that YBI had been awarded a license as a member of the UNESCO Non-Governmental Organization, in accordance with the global organization’s program to participate in developing the vision and mission of the cultural program.

One of them was to hold a campaign which was spread through communities, batik lovers, and activities to promote batik clothing in Indonesia, Pratama said.

“YBI, through a series of National Batik Day events, aims to spread good news, spread new paradigms to the public, that batik is not only about formal activities, but batik can also be and is comfortable to wear in various situations including daily activities,” she elaborated.

The series of National Batik Day events would continue until October 9, 2022.

Mall visitors in the Sudirman area who want  to add the best batiks to their collection could shop at the Batik Exhibition, in which 27 batik artisans are participating.

Meanwhile, on the same dates, October 2 to October 9, 2022, the foundation also organizes  an exhibition of their batik collections at Plaza Indonesia.

They also host a batik fashion show in a cafe in the afternoon.

The series of events for the 2022 National Batik Day will be concluded with a Batik Exhibition featuring 80 Batik Nitik collections at the Textile Museum (Art Museum), West Jakarta, starting October 12, 2022.

Batik Nitik is a collection of batik originating from Yogyakarta. At first glance, the Nitik batik motif resembles woven fabric, with one dominant color being brown, which means simplicity and honesty of the Javanese people.

The uniqueness of Batik Nitik is that it is the only written batik motif with a history and a different way of creating batik from others.

The canting (tool to make batik) used was split into 4, and the technique of how to make batik is by tapping, not dragging.

On the same occasion, Deputy President Director of Bank Mandiri Alexandra Askandar expected for the entire series of events on National Batik Day this time would spark people’s enthusiasm to continue to preserve batik and adopt batik as a national identity.

“Hopefully this initiative can be a stimulant for partnership development efforts and cultural preservation, promoting the added value of the Indonesian economy and batik industry in the future,” Askandar remarked.

Indonesia can become Muslim fashion trendsetter: ministry

Indonesia is in a strong position to become a global Muslim fashion trendsetter, assistant deputy for partnerships and market expansion at the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Fixy, said on Thursday.

“We have strong power in terms of designers and have a large population. How about becoming a trendsetter (for Muslim fashion) in the world?” she asked at a press conference here.

This year, the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs has joined the Indonesia Sharia Economic Festival (ISEF) with a mission to put Indonesian Muslim fashion on the international stage, including through the holding of the Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival (IN2MOTIONFEST).

IN2MOTIONFEST is also a result of collaboration with Bank Indonesia, the Indonesian Fashion Chamber, and other related institutions.

“Next year, it is hoped that other ministries will join related associations and stakeholders to push IN2MOTIONFEST to the international stage jointly,” she said.

Quoting President Joko Widodo, Fixy said that Indonesia, as one of the five largest markets for Muslim fashion in the world and the number one market in Asia, should be the leader in Muslim fashion.

She expressed the hope that Indonesia’s halal industry will advance, especially in modest fashion.

Blangkon Festival attracts youngsters to admire Javanese culture

The 2022 Blangkon Festival being held at Loji Gandrung, Solo, Central Java, on September 9-11, 2022, aims to attract the younger generation to develop an admiration for Javanese culture and become a touristic attraction.

“Actually, we hope that this would be an annual event. Our idealism is that young people love blangkon (traditional Javanese headgear),” Chairperson of the Surakarta City Tourism Awareness Group Mintorogo remarked at the opening of the festival in Solo on Friday.

At the festival, his side encouraged youngsters to admire the Javanese culture by inviting them to perform the opening dance. Mintorogo expects that they would develop an inclination to wear blangkon on several occasions.

His side also strives to educate on the philosophy behind wearing blangkon that complements the Javanese traditional clothing.

“Blangkon is philosophically worn to bind the mind, emotion, and spirituality. With blangkon, we cohere ourselves to our creator. Although Solo’s and Yogyakarta’s version of blangkon is different, the philosophy is generally the same,” he remarked.

To study further the philosophy, the 2022 Blangkon Festival will hold a talk show that presents a royal family member Kanjeng Gusti Pengeran Haryo (KGPH) Puger, who is one of the sons of Pakubuwono XII, the former monarch ruler of Surakarta Sunanate.

On the same occasion, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo lauded the festival. According to him, blangkon can show the age, status, and position of the person wearing it.

“You can know people by the blangkon they wear. Some are thin, some are big, and it can show the age and position,” he remarked.

Pranowo expressed hope that this activity would be developed in the following years, such as holding a blangkon competition. Thus, the Blangkon Festival can increase the people’s creativity and attract more youngsters to wear it.
