Bhumtham Clarifies No Long-Term Agreement on Government Positions

Bangkok: ‘Bhumtham’ insists that before forming a government, there was no agreement to sit on the chair for a long time. Phumtham Vejjayachai, the Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, addressed the speculation surrounding a potential cabinet reshuffle involving the Bhumjaithai Party. He emphasized that the Bhumjaithai Party must inquire directly about the rumors of a complete cabinet overhaul, as the truth remains unknown and he has yet to discuss the matter with the Prime Minister, who holds the authority to make such decisions.

According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham responded to inquiries about any pre-existing agreements with coalition parties on ministerial control at the government’s inception. He clarified that discussions about the duration of holding government positions were never held, and the focus was on implementing joint policies effectively. The priority is to adhere to these policies, which were announced to parliament as guiding principles.

Phumtham reiterated that there was no formal agreement on the distribution of positions. He recounted how media speculation had previously placed him in the Ministry of Interior, only for him to assume a role in the Ministry of Commerce. He noted that such discussions and rumors were mere speculation, and the definitive authority rested with the Prime Minister. Phumtham jested that while media speculation was permissible, he personally believed it was prudent to await the Prime Minister’s decision for accurate information.

When questioned about the fairness of potential ministry adjustments amid discussions of insufficient support, Phumtham stated that forming a government involves mutual consent among parties. He emphasized that no party is compelled to join a coalition, and if consensus cannot be reached, discussions cease.

Phumtham concluded by suggesting that any inquiries about potential cabinet transfers should be directed to the Prime Minister, reaffirming the Prime Minister’s role in determining the truth of the situation.
