“Bhumtham” Calls for Heightened Vigilance Following Arrest of BHQ Spy and Drone Seizure

Bangkok: Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, who is currently acting as Prime Minister, has emphasized the need for increased strictness following the arrest of a BHQ spy in Buriram and the discovery of hundreds of drones in Samut Prakan. He has urged investigations into possible connections with Cambodia.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham addressed a team from Lamduan Police Station, which had detained a Cambodian soldier suspected to be a spy from the BHQ unit protecting Hun Sen in Buriram Province. He mentioned the necessity of proceeding cautiously with the ongoing investigation, acknowledging the sensitive nature of the situation. Although unable to confirm specific details, Mr. Phumtham highlighted the importance of implementing more stringent measures, particularly concerning drone activities. He noted that any drone operations outside the seven border provinces, mainly agricultural areas, would require special permission. During this period of uncertainty, he stressed the importance of maintaining strict vigilance.

In response to the seizure of over 200 drones in Samut Prakan, Mr. Phumtham confirmed that arrests had been made and investigations were underway. He indicated that more information would be shared once investigations concluded. He was informed of the arrests on the night of August 5th, and the National Police Chief corroborated the report.

When questioned about potential links to Cambodia, Mr. Phumtham stated that thorough fact-checking was essential. If evidence supports such connections, they will be pursued; otherwise, the matter will be considered resolved.
