Bangkok’s Electric Train Project Under Scrutiny After Road Collapse

Bangkok: The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) of the House of Representatives is set to invite the Bangkok Governor and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) to examine the electric train project contract following a road collapse incident. The objective is to investigate the causative factors behind the incident, which occurred in front of Vajira Hospital during subway construction.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekphon Raksomkham, a Pheu Thai Party-list MP and a member of the House of Representatives' Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), highlighted the need to review the contracts encompassing the entire subway system. This includes scrutinizing the agreements with contractors and subcontractors, as well as assessing the responsibilities of the involved government officials. Mr. Raksomkham emphasized that this initial investigation should be prompt, contrasting it with the delayed inquiry into the Office of the Auditor General's building collapse. That incident was initially attributed to an earthquake, but further investigation revealed issues with steel and contract modifications. The NACC aims to foster proactive measures among government agencies, moving away from daily press conferences, to ensure transparency and public accountability.

Mr. Noppadon Tippayachol, an MP for Nonthaburi from the Prachachon Party and spokesman for the NACC, shared that he received additional insights from the provincial governor. The governor had convened with relevant agencies post-incident. As a result, the Bangkok Governor and the MRTA, the project's contract manager, are urged to collaborate in identifying the incident's root cause.
