Anutin Seeks Clarity from Security Agencies on Border Electricity Cut-Off

Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has called on security agencies to provide answers regarding the potential cessation of electricity supply at the border. Anutin emphasized that the decision to cut off power rests with security agencies and not the Ministry of Interior. He noted that if a directive to stop was issued, the electricity would be halted immediately, highlighting the significance of addressing issues such as call center scams.

According to Thai News Agency, Anutin addressed the situation following a press conference by the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), explaining the sale of electricity to Myanmar. He stated that should security agencies declare the sale a threat to national security, the power supply would cease without delay. Anutin reiterated that the PEA conducts sales based on directives from these agencies.

Anutin further elaborated on the lack of awareness regarding agreements between security agencies or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and neighboring countries. He affirmed a willingness to continue sales under humanitarian grounds unless instructed otherwise. The responsibility, he stated, lies with security agencies to communicate any cessation orders, as the Ministry of Interior acts on their directives.

Regarding the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT)'s upcoming meeting with security agencies, Anutin mentioned that multiple requests have been made to determine the status of electricity sales to neighboring countries, but a formal response remains pending. He clarified that EGAT operates under orders, and a directive to cease sales would be promptly executed.

Anutin addressed concerns over the use of supplied electricity for illegal activities, asserting that complaints have been filed and security agencies are responsible for investigating such claims. He emphasized readiness to stop electricity supply upon notification, describing the process as straightforward.

In response to inquiries about the visit of Liu Zhongyi, Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Public Security of China, to Mae Sot District for inspecting scam-related activities, Anutin stated he was unaware and reiterated that international relations fall under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' purview.

Anutin dismissed suggestions that the lack of Thai representation during the visit indicated a lack of government concern. He affirmed the government's commitment to security matters and reiterated the importance of security agencies promptly notifying the Ministry of Interior about any misuse of electricity. Anutin underscored that the Ministry of Interior acts on collective advice from multiple agencies and stands ready to comply with cessation orders when issued.
