Anutin Reassures Public on Population Data Security Amid Oreo Gang Hacking Allegations

Bangkok: "Anutin" insists the Interior Ministry has a system to prevent access to population registration data. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, addressed concerns regarding online allegations about the Oreo gang, a group of teenagers reportedly accessing sensitive population registration data. He stated unequivocally that the Interior Ministry's systems are robust and designed to prevent unauthorized access to such data.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anutin acknowledged that the Oreo gang, known for their aggressive behavior in online games like Five M, allegedly accessed and utilized population registration data to target individuals. He highlighted that the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is prepared to take action should any breach be confirmed, but reassured the public that the current systems require a purpose and approval process for data access, making unauthorized access unlikely.

Mr. Anutin further explained that while the Oreo gang had posted screenshots from the Civil Registration Office on social media, it was likely a case of hacking rather than a password breach. He emphasized the importance of the revelation of such vulnerabilities, as it necessitates immediate investigation. He assured the public that the Ministry of Interior is cooperating with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to address the issue and warned that any ministry officials found complicit would face severe consequences.

In response to claims that the Oreo gang consists of children of police officers with potential access to such data, Mr. Anutin dismissed the notion that familial ties to officials, whether police officers, district chiefs, or governors, would allow for any misuse of data. He reiterated that no individual, regardless of their connections, is above the law or entitled to special privileges concerning sensitive information.
