85-Year-Old Woman Recovers 2 Million Baht After Call Center Scam

Bangkok: An 85-year-old former teacher expressed relief and happiness upon recovering 2 million baht that she had been deceived into transferring by a call center gang. The group falsely claimed to represent the Ministry of Finance, prompting the elderly woman to act under their direction.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong Phiwpaen, Commander of the Cyber Police, provided updates on the case. The Cyber Police, having received the complaint from the victim through Pak Kret Police Station, quickly coordinated with the bank to halt the transaction. Preliminary investigations revealed multiple transfers to the destination bank, which successfully suspended the transfer. Although the bank mentioned a potential 200 baht deduction as a fee, they assured that a seizure order would be issued to return the funds to the victim. Efforts to identify the culprits and locate the mule accounts involved are ongoing.

The victim's grandson shared that following the scam, he promptly accompanied his grandmother to file a police report. The grandmother, reflecting on the incident, mentioned that she was saving the funds for her children, grandchildren, and her own funeral arrangements.
