BNPB plans to conduct disaster simulation exercise with ASEAN nations

Yogyakarta (ANTARA) – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is planning to hold the ASEAN Regional Disaster Emergency Response Simulation Exercise (ARDEX) with other ASEAN countries in Bantul, Yogyakarta.”Today, the (Bantul) District Head received us to report on the planned activities of 2023 ARDEX, a disaster mitigation exercise for ASEAN countries, as part of Indonesia’s commitment as ASEAN Chair this year,” BNPB Chief Secretary Lilik Kurniawan explained here on Wednesday.

ccording to Kurniawan, the 2023 ARDEX is planned to be held from July 31 to August 3 outside the Sultan Agung Stadium in Bantul.

“It has been programmed, and we chose Bantul to be the training venue because it has the capacity to support it and has the most number of volunteers in Yogyakarta Province, which is about three thousand people from the disaster mitigation community,” he remarked.

In addition, Kurniawan said, the disaster resilient village program is applied in almost all villages of Bantul.

This year’s ARDEX will be part of the exercise commemorating the 17th anniversary of the 2006 earthquake in Bantul.

“Now, Bantul already has the contingency plan that we will test together. We expect all ASEAN countries to attend, with at least each country sending five to 10 people. With 10 countries, it means that between 50 and 100 people will come to exercise together,” he remarked.

He revealed that the BNPB will also invite countries that are Indonesia’s partners in disaster mitigation, such as Australia, the US, Japan, and Switzerland, as well as other regions as observers.

Furthermore, he noted that the BNPB has been working to design the different types of activities for the four days of the exercise that will be adjusted to the existing contingency plan.

“We have received the district head’s support to carry out the program because we have to involve the resources in Bantul, from facilities and infrastructure, such as the stadium and others, and regional mitigation agencies (BPBD), the health office, volunteers, and forums,” he stated.

Maluku endeavors to revitalize Seram, Tarangan local languages

Maluku (ANTARA) – The Maluku Language Agency included the Seram language from Eastern Seram and Tarangan language from the Aru Islands into the regional language revitalization program.”This year, we continue the Maluku regional language revitalization program, and there are two additional languages from Eastern Seram and the Aru Islands. Hence, we are revitalizing five regional languages,” Head of the Maluku Language Agency Sahril stated here on Wednesday.

Last year, the agency sought to revitalize three regional languages: Kei language from Southeast Maluku, Buru language from Buru District, and Yamdena language from the Tanimbar Islands.

Sahril deemed it necessary to revive the number of local language speakers, as the figure was decreasing, in an effort to sustain the use of languages.

ccording to the agency head, regional languages are not always spoken in daily lives, especially among members of the younger generation, as they are only consistently spoken during traditional ceremonies or rituals.

Hence, he pressed for the need to conduct revitalization efforts, so that regional languages in Maluku do not fall into extinction.

He explained that the revitalization program in Maluku was implemented in stages due to the large number of regional languages in the province and the limited number of human resources and available funding.

Moreover, Sahril said that the targeted languages were determined by the agency after consulting with community representatives and local governments.

fter consulting with them, out of the 14 regional languages in Eastern Seram and 11 in the Aru Islands, Seram and Tarangan languages were considered the common languages (lingua franca) there due to which they were accorded priority in the program.

His side will implement the program in elementary and junior high schools through poetry recitation, speech, singing, writing letters to officials, and stand-up comedy competitions.

He recalled that the city received the Harmony Award from the Religious Affairs Ministry on January 3, 2021.

Still, it is expected that the local people and the government will continue to strengthen their joint commitment to bolstering the spirit of harmony as well as the growth of the city for the glory of God, the deputy minister said.

He said he hoped that the commitment can actually be realized by developing the city in a conducive and orderly manner.

“Thus, we can create various development innovations to realize a peaceful and prosperous urban society,” he added.

He said he expects that instead, the community will optimize science and technology to capture business opportunities, improve spiritual and educational literacy, as well as promote the results of the development programs in their respective regions.

Meanwhile, acting Mayor of Jayapura CityFrans Pekey said that the Harmony Award Monument is not a mere building as it will always remind the people in the region about the importance of religious tolerance.

Culture is the very foundation of village development: minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Culture is the very foundation of village development, Villages, Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration Minister Abdul Halim Iskandar has said.”What’s for certain is that the first basis of village handling is culture,” he said here on Wednesday while receiving a visit from the director general of cultural affairs at the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry, Hilmar Farid.

positive culture is necessary for development; and the revitalization of cultural aspects is important, so that it can meet the need for improvement, the minister added.

Thus, the ministry has responded positively to the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry’s initiative to host the Village Culture Development program, he said.

The program seeks to identify patterns that can cater to different problems, potential, and needs of each region, Iskandar informed.

“The pattern must be determined. But it still has to be measured, and obviously, must remain consistent and sustainable,” the minister added.

The program is the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry’s priority program and was initiated in 2021. It aims to promote the development of culture through the empowerment of village residents.

The target is in keeping with Minister Iskandar’s idea outlined in the 18th point of the Village Sustainable Development Goals, which covers the development of dynamic village institutions and an adaptive village culture so that villages can develop without letting go of their deep-rooted culture.

Minister Iskandar said that culture should not be lost to time; instead, it must become the basis of growth toward an independent village.

Meanwhile, Farid informed that the program will target at least 235 villages. Those villages will be given training on village development through a cultural approach.

“The point is, we collect data. Cultural potential is not only art, but also technology, including language. We want to address issues in villages, like stunting and such, but we are more so focused on the cultural approach,” he said.

ITS students asked to innovate, support people in remote areas

Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) – Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini has urged the civitas academica of Surabaya’s Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) to pursue innovation in order to help people in disadvantaged regions and remote places.”I encourage students and civitas academica of ITS to create innovation and technology to assist people in disadvantaged regions and remote places,” the minister said after giving a speech at a studium generale at the ITS campus on Wednesday.

Rismaharini commended the university, which has been contributing to the state all along through its innovative works.

She recalled some of the university’s innovations, which have been used to support her ministry’s programs.

“In some instances, we have been assisted by ITS. For example, earthquake-resistant residential building, micro-hydro, and ships. And these (innovations) have been done with knowledge transfer method,” she elaborated.

Thus, the university’s innovations have not merely been projects to be completed, she said. There has been an educational intent manifested through training for the public, Rismaharini noted.

“Fellows from ITS also facilitate people in Papuan regions, for example. Despite the terrain that is difficult to traverse through,” she said.

The minister pointed out that based on her experience collaborating with them — from when she was Surabaya Mayor to her current appointment as Social Affairs Minister — the university’s technology has offered many great benefits.

The quality of the university’s technology is the same as similar products in the market. Moreover, it is much cheaper and affordable, while also offering similar functions as other products.

Rector of Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology Prof. Mochamad Ansari said that his administration will always support and assist the public through innovations in technology.

He cited ship-building in Papua as an example, wherein the lecturers take part in the manufacturing process in person.

“Developing remote areas is (a way to) foster empathy, realizing that around us, there are many who need help,” he said.

ITS has befitting technology to achieve that end, he added. Coupled with programs from the ministry, all the university needs to do is do it, for example, by preparing architects or building ships, Ansari elaborated.
