Telkomsel and private firm test 5G network, service

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Cellular operator Telkomsel, a subsidiary of state-run telecommunications company Telkom Group, is collaborating with a private company to test out 5G network utilization in Indonesia’s maritime region to support national economic growth.”Telkomsel consistently continues to strengthen its main capability in providing the latest telecommunication network and service based on the development of the people’s demand,” Telkomsel’s network director, Nugroho, said in a press statement issued on Tuesday.

The 5G service test is being carried out in Gorontalo since the province, which has a coastline spanning 903.7 kilometers, is one of the regions in Indonesia with the largest maritime potential.

The maritime sector is one of the sectors that Gorontalo is relying on to drive its economy, with the livelihoods of 19,013 fishermen in the area depending on sea resources, according to data recorded by the local Marine and Fishery Office in 2019.

Thus, the availability of a communication network infrastructure is one of the important prerequisites to support the growth and acceleration of a digital-based economy in the region.

For the trial, Telkomsel is collaborating with ZTE. The cooperation was announced during the “2023 Mobile World Congress (MWC)” in Barcelona, Spain.

The 5G broadband service test collaboration is expected to open better digital telecommunications access opportunities, Nugroho said.

It is also expected to expedite the growth of the digital economy in Gorontalo in a more inclusive and sustainable manner, he added.

The company will conduct a 2.3Ghz frequency band-based 5G network test to improve the quality and coverage of the broadband network, which utilizes active antenna technology and can cover an area of up to 60 km.

The collaboration is intended to support the acceleration of national economic growth through the provision of digital connectivity for the development of the fishery and marine tourism sectors.

The test is also being undertaken to meet the demand for communication access potential in maritime regions in Indonesia.

The expansion of 5G coverage in Indonesia’s maritime territory is expected to support more economic activities such as shipping, fisheries, and tourism.

Health Polytechnic must produce quality health workers: Ministry

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Health Ministry encourages the Health Polytechnic (Poltekkes) to assist the government in producing quality health workers in accordance with the needs of health development.”Most importantly, we need the addition of (more number of) health workers in the community health center (puskesmas) with general practitioners, dentists, nurses, midwives, environmental health staff, nutritionists, staff at laboratories, pharmacists, and for health promotion,” Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono noted in a written statement received here, Tuesday.

Harbuwono remarked that the role of Poltekkes was effective in increasing the quota for new student admissions, improving types of study programs, and opening international classes.

“This Poltekkes has a lot of potential that can be developed. People are also excited with this development. We must push it to be better,” he remarked while visiting the ministry’s Poltekkes in Padang, West Sumatra, Monday (February 27).

Harbuwono called for the pressing need to increase the capacity for student admissions, as the ratio of student admissions at Poltekkes Padang was still small, as compared to the large number of applicants.

He pointed out that in 2022, the number of applicants for the ministry’s Poltekkes had reached eight thousand while only accepting 790 people. Hence, the ministry decided to increase the enrollment quota.

“There are a lot of people interested in this Poltekkes. Currently, the ratio is 1:18, out of eight thousand people who have registered, only 700 people have been accepted. We ask for more quota,” he stated.

Harbuwono remarked that in addition to increasing the capacity for student admissions, Padang Poltekkes is encouraged to add two study programs: Medical Laboratory Technology Expert (ATLM) and pharmacy.

He emphasized that the study program was urgently needed to help the government meet the qualification of the health workforce that must be available at puskesmas.

He also encouraged the Poltekkes to open international classes for existing study programs that should be followed by improving language skills in accordance with the destination country.

“We also encourage the development of an international class, which will be able to send nurses to various countries, including Japan. For the education system, the students must be able to speak the language of the destination country,” he noted.

Meanwhile, director of Padang Poltekkes, Renidayanti, said that Padang Poltekkes is committed to realizing these three focus areas.

“In 2023, we are ready to add 600-700 to the students’ quota, so the number of our students will reach 1,400, with a 1:21 ratio,” Renidayanti stated.

She noted that additional study programs are also being prepared and readied to be implemented starting this year.

Renidayanti said that the international class would be opened for the 2023-2024 school year. To this end, several facilities and infrastructure have been prepared to support the new program.

“We have also prepared learning facilities. This year, we will also open student admissions for an international class, which is one class for the nursing department, with a quota of 40 people,” she stated.

Everything starts with education: UNRC in Indonesia

Jakarta (ANTARA) – UN Resident Coordinator (UN RC) in IndonesiaValerie Julliandon Tuesday highlighted the importance of education in the lives of Indonesians and for ensuring the stability of the nation.”Everything starts with education,” she said after a signing ceremony for an educational collaboration between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN) here.

Education is very important for the community because it can have a major impact on a country’s peace and stability. Education also has a big impact on nation-building, she said.

“People who are educated know better to take care of themselves and their children,” she said.

Therefore, she considered the collaboration on education carried out by UNESCO and IGCN to be a very important initiative for humanity, especially because this also involves many educational institutions from various religious organizations.

“This initiative and particularly one also that brings together different religions, so that we dwell on this very principle of tolerance and acceptance of others with differences, is essential,” Julliandsaid.

She further described the collaboration as a breakthrough that will initiate collaboration across religions and education sectors.

This collaboration, she said, also will help realize the target of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Number 17, which is about the importance of partnerships for achieving goals.

“The main important feature of the SDGs is that they are interdependent, you can never achieve one is to achieve if you don’t achieve the other one,” she said.

“You need education to fight poverty. You need education to have decent jobs. You need education to have peace and stability. So, in that sense, this partnership is very essential,” she added.

Director of the UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Mohamed Djelid also expressed optimism that the collaboration will have a positive impact on education in Indonesia.

“The government alone, your school alone, couldn’t go alone. We cannot achieve anything. It has to be a partnership,” he said.

The collaboration between UNESCO and IGCN is an effort to improve access and the quality of education through capacity building and training of teachers and school principals to improve school management, in line with the national curriculum.

The collaboration also aims to support the collaboration that has been underway between Kupuku Indonesia, Malang Diocese Carmel Foundation, and the Ma’arif NU Banyuwangi Education Institute, an interfaith-based collaborative program in the field of education.
