New Capital Authority leader should be aware of local wisdom: senator

Palangka Raya, C Kalimantan The New Capital Authority leader should not only be smart and determined in building infrastructure but also have sensitivity and the ability to see potential in local wisdom, Senator Agustin Teras Narang has said.

An awareness of local knowledge would be crucial for encouraging the society and stakeholders in Kalimantan Island to support Nusantara Capital City (IKN,) Narang said at a webinar on “Searching for the Ideal Leader for New Capital Authority Body Nusantara,” accessed from Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, on Saturday.

“Because the IKN Law that was passed by the House of Representatives (DPR RI), the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), and the central government, states that the IKN Authority leader’s position will be on the same level with the ministry and have special authority,” he added.

The prospective leader of Indonesia’s new capital will hold special powers such as for issuing investment licenses, ease of doing business, fiscal and/or non-fiscal incentives, as well as granting facilities to anyone who supports financing for the preparation, development, and transfer of the new capital, he noted.

The New Capital Nusantara Authority head could even make history in terms of Indonesian state administration as they will be elected and appointed by the President after consultation with the House, he said.

Given the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of net-zero carbon emissions by 2060, the IKN leader must preserve the region’s unique forest wealth by avoiding investment that can damage forests in the long term, Narang said.

“What is the use of a forest city if the heart of Borneo becomes only a memory?” the senator remarked.

The webinar organized by Borneo Muda also featured former North Kalimantan Governor Irianto Lambrie and Indonesian Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, Mochammad Fadjroel Rachman, as speakers.

Development of Mandalika will not stop after MotoGP: KSP

Jakarta The development of the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will not stop after the 2022 MotoGP Pertamina Grand Prix, Deputy I of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Febry Calvin Tetelepta, has emphasized.

“The implementation of 2022 MotoGP is only the beginning of local economic recovery,” he remarked in a statement issued here on Saturday.

He said he expected more national and international events to be held in the area in the future.

He then asked the public to support the implementation of the events to create long-term multiplier effects for the community.

One of the keys to realizing the multiplier effect of the development of the tourism destination area is by empowering local communities, he said.

This is in accordance with the commitment and directives of President Joko Widodo on the establishment and development of the economic zone, he noted.

“Since the beginning, the development of the Mandalika area has been designed holistically. Thus, the infrastructure development and local community empowerment must be carried out simultaneously,” Tetelepta said.

There will be many tourism supporting sectors—such as construction, lodging, meal, transportation, as well as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs)—which will benefit from the multiplier effect of the development of the tourism area, he added.

“The implementation of events will certainly involve the local community. It shows that the development of the Mandalika SEZ is dedicated to the welfare of the Indonesian people, especially the people of NTB province,” he added.

The Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit is holding the 2022 MotoGP pre-season test from February 11–13, 2022. Pol Espargaro was the fastest rider on the first day of the test, while Luca Marini bested the other competitors on the second day.

Meanwhile, the 2022 MotoGP Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia will take place from March 18–20, 2022.

Garuda Indonesia to reopen Sydney-Bali flights

Denpasar, Bali State airline carrier PT Garuda Indonesia will resume flights from Sydney, Australia to Denpasar, Bali, to support the reopening of international routes to Bali, Bali Governor Wayan Koster has informed.

“I got a call from Garuda Indonesia president director regarding the plan for (reopening the flight route) from Sydney to Denpasar,” he said during a press conference at Denpasar city on Saturday.

According to Koster, reopening the Sydney-Bali flight route would be a good initial step as the local economy has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As to when the flight route from Australia will be reopened, Koster said his team is still waiting for updates.

“It is currently being planned; still waiting for the progress,” the Governor remarked.

In addition, Australia’s Jetstar Airways is planning to open flights to the Island of the Gods, so it is expected that Australian tourists will enter Bali soon, he informed.

Meanwhile, on February 16, 2022, Singapore Airlines (SQ) will carry passengers to Bali, he noted. “Hopefully, there are no obstacles so that it can proceed,” he said.

The opening of a number of international flights to Bali would build momentum for its tourism recovery, he remarked.

“Hopefully, this Omicron (situation) can be controlled, with the hard work of all official ranks such as the regional military commander, regional police chief, and district heads/mayors in Bali,” he said.

If the endeavors to handle COVID-19 in Bali can run well, tourism recovery can begin, he added.

On February 3, the arrival of a Garuda Indonesia flight (GA 881) from Narita, Japan to Denpasar, Bali marked the reopening of international flights at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali.
