Happy Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year (Imlek) is the most important celebration for Chinese people, with 16-day-long celebrations, commencing on the first day of the Chinese calendar’s first month and ending with Cap Go Meh on the 15th.

Chinese New Year’s Eve is known as Chúxi, which means “New Year’s Eve.”

Every year, Imlek is celebrated on a different date, and this year, it is celebrated on February 1, 2022. The Chinese New Year celebration of 2573 Kongzili this year marks the start of the year of the Water Tiger.

Various special dishes and ornaments with red nuances enliven the Chinese New Year celebrations. Gathering with the family is an important practice followed during Imlek.

Akin to ethnic Chinese in various other countries, Chinese-Indonesian ethnic groups also celebrate Chinese New Year.

People of Chinese descent in Indonesia were again given the freedom to celebrate the Chinese New Year in 2000 during the administration of President Abdurrahman Wahid.

Exemplified herewith are accounts of people that celebrate the Chinese New Year. Siau Cin, often called Acin, lived in the Selakau area, Sambas, West Kalimantan. Before the Chinese New Year, she usually does some preparations, such as cleaning and decorating the house and also buying clothes. She also readies an array of pastries, snacks, and drinking water to welcome the family, neighbors, and guests. She always buys new clothing that are more identical with the red color and have writings, such as the letters fu or blessing.

Acin and her family eat together to enjoy the special dishes. On that day, the vegetable dishes or side dishes are usually more plentiful and complete.

Acin’s family is grateful for being able to celebrate another new year together. In addition, they visited their relatives and friends. Acin noted that this is not only done during the Chinese New Year celebrations, but most of the other ethnic groups also get involved in doing the same activities.

On the first day of Imlek, at around 7 a.m. local time, Acin and her family went to buy incense and then visited the temple to pray together. Acin said that her parents had since long always gone to pray at the pagoda in the morning. I never asked why it had to be in the morning, I just followed it. However, there were also people that left at around 9 or 10 a.m.

According to Acin, some other rituals are also followed during Imlek, such as not sweeping for three days because there is a belief that if you sweep during the Chinese New Year, your sustenance will be swept out too. That means the fortunes that have come will be wasted. In addition, washing clothes is also prohibited, and there should be no fuss at home. Cutting the hair is also not allowed. People believe that if we cut our hair, our luck this year will be cut off too.

Acin, 20, is a vegetarian. Her favorite dishes during Imlek are Capcay, vegetarian rendang, and KuiFei satay (kuifei is a type of artificial meat made from soybeans). However, for non-vegetarians like her mother and sister prefer dishes, such as steamed fish and chicken soup. That family also likes vegetarian dumplings.

Honestly, for Acin, the most awaited moment during Imlek is getting angpao from the family, relatives, and neighbors. However, she can no longer get angpao if she is already working and has sufficient income, especially if married, because it will then be her turn to give angpao.

Another aspect she was waiting for eagerly was a full family gathering. Every Chinese New Year, her relatives always come home, albeit not all of them.

Acin said the most memorable memories while celebrating Imlek are created by meeting the people, who usually rarely see each other or had not met for years. Moreover, she said her savings increased due to the practice of giving angpao.

Acin’s family still upholds the Chinese tradition, as it has become a hereditary tradition that is always followed and eventually imbibed and had become a habit. She believes that it is good for all of them. She is also sentient of the benefits and advantages of preserving Chinese traditions, one of which is upholding the ties of brotherhood, kinship, and cohesiveness.

The difference in Chinese New Year celebrations before and during pandemic is very pronounced. Before the pandemic, the celebrations were livelier and busier, and activities were conducted normally as usual. People can visit each other and tourism places are also crowded without having to worry about transmitting the virus.

Meanwhile, currently, during the pandemic, Imlek was not as lively as the previous year, and no Cap Go Meh celebrations were held. Acin said when they want to visit relatives or friends, they have to think again. Moreover, walking outside is not easy, with one having to keep a distance, always being vigilant, and wearing a mask.

But of course, there is wisdom behind it all, she stated.

Acin has never celebrated Chinese New Year in China, but one day, she expects to celebrate it there. Looks like it will be very lively and fun anyway, according to Acin.

For Acin, Chinese New Year has several meanings. For instance, it is more synonymous with meeting all family members, being able to strengthen kinship ties, being able to visit places of worship such as pagodas and monasteries, and give offerings in the form of fruits and praying to the God, Goddess, and Bodhisattva Buddha.

During this year’s Chinese New Year, Acin is optimistic of being able to surmount the COVID-19 pandemic quickly and all activities returning to normal and everyone always being happy and healthy.

Novita, a resident of the capital city of Jakarta, is also one of those celebrating Chinese New Year in Indonesia.

Welcoming Imlek, Novita always shops for necessary items for Chinese New Year, for instance, hampers for co-workers, friends, and family. He also prepares special dishes to be enjoyed with the family. In addition, Novita exchanges money for hongbao (angpao).

Novita and her family usually eat together at night before and during the Chinese New Year. She has also prepared hongbao for his family, including his children.

Novita’s family always decorates the house with accessories having Chinese nuances. They also visited the graves of their ancestors. Usually, they also light firecrackers before the Imlek dinner or when the Chinese New Year begins. In addition, they go to the temple to seek for their fortune.

Some of her favorite foods during Imlek celebrations are herbal steam chicken, spicy beef stir fry, spicy cooked prawns, Szechuan spicy sour fish, and spicy sour potatoes.

For Novita, the most awaited moment during the Chinese New Year is decorating the house with Chinese New Year knick-knacks that symbolize various blessings and hopes. She also looks forward to giving hongbao or angpao and eating together with family, friends, and colleagues that symbolizes celebration, prosperity, and happiness in togetherness.

She affirmed that the most memorable memories during the Chinese New Year celebrations are the high family values, as kin and relatives can gather on that day.

Novita and her family still uphold Chinese traditions, as her husband comes from China, and they still preserve traditions during the Chinese New Year celebrations.

According Novita, during the two years of the pandemic, there were many differences in the way the Chinese New Year was celebrated.

Before the pandemic, Novita, her husband, and their two children always flew to China to celebrate the Chinese New Year. There, they usually held celebrations at her parents-in-law’s house. She noted that the atmosphere of celebrations in China was certainly livelier and very crowded with the presence of relatives. It was very different from the Chinese New Year celebrations in Indonesia.

Novita was unable to express exactly how enthralling the Chinese New Year celebrations were in China, with firecrackers and fireworks illuminating the sky and making the atmosphere even more lively. In addition, Chinese New Year celebrations in China will still go on for almost a month.

For Novita, the Chinese New Year symbolizes happiness, kinship, and prosperity, which is quite lively for all those who celebrate it.

Novita, a mother of two, is optimistic that this year would be bring in more blessings, health, togetherness, and also happiness for all who celebrate.

Cyber security, metaverse, fintech are future businesses: Uno

Three businesses would be in high demand in future namely cyber security, metaverse, and payment systems and financial technology/fintech, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno said.

“Thank God, there were no cyber-attacks in our session, but the session with Minister of Communications and Informatics Johnny G. Plate was repeatedly hit by cyber-attacks. There is something that interferes with our event,” he said at the launch of the Muhammadiyah Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Incubator (MCEBI) and the hybrid Business Clinic with Sandiaga on Tuesday.

The second sector that would be in demand in the future is metaverse, which has the potential to attract US$720 billion in investment in the next three years, he added.

The metaverse is considered an embodiment of technology that moves quickly, Uno remarked adding, that in the digital sector, business actors can make profits without taking big risks.

One way to monetize digital goods is non-fungible tokens (NFT), which have become popular in Indonesia ever since Indonesian citizen Sultan Gustaf Al-Ghozali sold pictures of himself via an NFT and managed to earn Rp13 billion, he noted.

“From the Rp13 billion that he earned, he was only able to monetize Rp30 million of it. However, it is a good start. In my opinion, the metaverse is one area that is closer to entertainment,” Uno remarked.

Reflecting on the past, many technology companies such as Friendster and MySpace have not been able to compete with Facebook or Google, the minister noted.

“If we invest in Friendster or MySpace, we will be out of the game. We will not be profitable. But if we choose Facebook, we can gain revenue,” the former Jakarta Deputy Governor said.

Uno said that payment systems and financial technologies will also be needed in upcoming years.

Therefore, the payment system and financial technology sectors must be expanded and utilized to solve problems regarding capital access for business actors, he added.

MSME empowerment programs running as envisaged: minister

Policies for empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises have been progressing according to plan and have incorporated inputs from MSME actors for dealing with pandemic conditions.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, delivered the remarks during a visit to Warung Soto Rumput, Salatiga, to savor their culinary offerings.

“I am a fan of this kind of cuisine. I am also very happy to get to know and talk to the owner. This experience would allow me to find out whether the program that has been prepared by the government has been useful for helping MSME actors,” he said in an official statement on Tuesday.

The minister said he also gave some tips and motivated the owner of Warung Soto Rumput, Sugiono (36), during the visit.

Airlangga said, as a part of the young generation, Sugiono should continue to utilize his potential in business development, so that he can be more competitive in the future, thereby broadening the scope of job opportunities to provide to others.

“As a driving force for the Indonesian economy, the MSME sector is expected to continue to develop and (significantly contribute) to national economic growth,” the minister added.

The government has prepared various programs to empower MSMEs, especially the ones affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the National Economic Recovery Program for MSME Support, he noted.

In 2021, the total realization of the support was recorded at Rp89.19 trillion, which was disbursed to 34.59 million MSME debtors, Hartarto said.

This year, the government will increase the budget for public enterprises credit (KUR) to Rp373.17 trillion and extend an additional 3 percent of credit interest subsidy until the end of June 2022, he informed.

“I expect that many MSME players will take advantage of the programs that have been provided by the government, especially the younger generation who are just starting out in entrepreneurship. The more MSMEs that are born and are ready to compete globally, (that) will also (contribute to) strengthening the Indonesian economy in the (global scope),” Hartarto said.

Search launched for two climbers in W Java’s Mount Malabar

The Bandung Search and Rescue (SAR) Office has launched a search for two climbers, identified as Ace (33) and Yoga (14), who were reported missing while making their descent from Mount Malabar, Bandung district, West Java.

Head of Bandung SAR office Deden Ridwansyah informed that the two climbers were reported missing on Monday (January 31, 2022) while making their descent from the top of the mountain. The two missing persons are residents of the Arjasari sub-district, Bandung district, he said.

“Based on the reports received from the survivors’ family, the two survivors went up to Mount Malabar on Sunday (January 30, 2022) at 7.30 a.m.,” Ridwansyah said here on Tuesday.

According to him, the two climbers started their ascent from Mekarjaya village, Arjasari sub-district. Their initial plan was to return home the same day and not set up camp, he added.

However, after arriving at the top of the mountain, the two climbers were said to have met a group of six people and decided to camp with them, he informed.

“The group had climbed to the top since Saturday (January 29). They decided to camp together and descended on Monday (January 31),” he said.

The two missing climbers reportedly went down first and planned to wait for the group at a pre-decided point, he added.

“However, the group did not find the two survivors at the point. They then searched for the two survivors for around three hours,” he said.

The group suspected that the two climbers went missing since the motorbike belonging to one of them was still parked at the Mekarjaya Village Office, he added.

After receiving the report of the two missing climbers, the SAR dispatched a rescue team on Monday morning, Ridwansyah said. The SAR team has previously coordinated intensively with the Bandung District’s Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), he added.

“According to the victims’ family, the two survivors did not bring a complete survival kit because their original plan was not to camp,” he said.

Influencers must be selective in endorsing financial products: OJK

The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has asked influencers and public figures to be selective in accepting offers for endorsing financial products, especially those related to investments.

“You have to be selective. Don’t just blindly accept the offers,” head of the Central Kalimantan Financial Services Authority, Otto Fitriandy, said when contacted in Palangka Raya on Tuesday.

He explained that this is necessary for preventing illegal or fraudulent investment practices that could harm the public.

Fitriandy then drew attention to various illegal investment cases recorded so far. Often there were influencers, artists, and public figures involved, who were unaware of the illegal status of the products or services they endorsed, he said.

“They didn’t know that they were being used, their influence was being abused, so that people would participate in the investment,” he added.

To avoid similar cases from happening in the future, influencers and public figures should not randomly accept endorsement offers related to financial products or services, he said.

He stressed that influencer endorsement is usually one of the methods adopted by those offering illegal or fraudulent investments.

The influencers, on their part, could consult with the Financial Services Authority to ensure that the product or service they are endorsing is truly legal and in accordance with applicable regulations, he said.

The Financial Services Authority is extensively educating the Central Kalimantan public, including influencers and public figures, about the financial services sector, he added.

“Influencers, or public figures, have an important role in helping educate the public. Because their social media, in particular, are always seen by the public,” he explained.

However, if any influencers are found promoting illegal investments, it is within the authorities’ scope to investigate and determine whether they are at fault or not, he said.

RI-Singapore FIR agreement document should be accessible to public

Legislator Sukamta, Indonesian House of Representatives’ (DPR RI’s) Commission I member, urged the government to make the document of Flight Information Region (FIR) agreement between the governments of Indonesia and Singapore accessible to the public.

“Agreements made with other countries are included in the category of public policy because they concern the lives of many people and also involve state sovereignty. The agreement documents related to extradition, airspace services, and defense cooperation that have been signed must be made accessible to the public,” Sukamta noted in his statement here on Tuesday.

Sukamta remarked that the government’s explanation on the FIR agreement, so far, concerned the points of the agreement and not the texts of the official document that had been signed.

The Natuna Islands and Riau Islands are very strategic for Indonesia, so the public is optimistic that sovereignty on land, sea, and air is within the scope of control of the Indonesian side, according to the legislator.

“Based on agreements contained in the UNCLOS III 1982 and the Chicago Convention 1944, state sovereignty in the air space above the territory is exclusive. This means the air space over the Natuna Islands and Riau is Indonesian sovereignty,” he remarked.

Hence, based on this claim, the Indonesian side should be in charge of the management of FIR in the area, he stated.

Sukamta is optimistic that the agreement document, or MoU, would be accessible to the public, so that all parties would be able to provide an objective assessment of the points of the agreement that had been signed.

On January 25, 2022, the Indonesian and Singaporean governments had approved agreements on extradition, Flight Information Region (FIR), and defense cooperation.

“The new extradition agreement extends the retroactive period, from 15 years to 18 years,” President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) noted in a joint press statement with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after attending the Indonesian-Singaporean Leaders’ Retreat in Riau Islands Province.

“Meanwhile, the signing of the FIR agreement makes the Jakarta FIR to cover the territorial airspace over Riau Islands and Natuna Islands,” the Indonesian president stated.

Since 1946, the areas were under the Singapore FIR, as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) assessed that Indonesia had not been able to regulate air traffic in the areas.

The regulation necessitates Indonesian aircraft to report to Singaporean authorities if they are looking to fly over the area.

Hence, the Indonesian government is striving to take over the areas from the Singapore FIR to strengthen international recognition of Indonesia, as an archipelagic country, which has full and exclusive sovereignty on the airspace above its territory. Under the agreement on airspace management, Singapore and Indonesia have agreed to realign the boundary between the Jakarta Flight Information Region (FIR) and Singapore FIR.

Indonesia will delegate to Singapore regarding the provision of air navigation services in portions of the airspace within the realigned Jakarta FIR. This agreement will remain in force for 25 years and can be extended by mutual consent.

Indonesia urges Myanmar military to promptly implement ASEAN’s 5PC

Indonesia urged Myanmar’s military to swiftly implement the five-point consensus (5PC) and immediately provide access to the ASEAN Special Envoy to commence its duty as per the mandate of the ASEAN leaders through the 5PC.

“As a family, the ASEAN has extended a helping hand through the 5PC. Unfortunately, to date, there has not been significant progress in the implementation of the 5PC,” the Indonesian Foreign Ministry noted in a press statement here on Tuesday.

Indonesia lauds the international community’s support for the ASEAN’s 5PC, according to the ministry in its release issued to coincide with the one year of the seizure of power by the military in Myanmar that Indonesia has strongly deplored.

“Indonesia will continue to provide assistance and utmost priority for the safety and well-being of the Myanmar people,” the statement noted regarding a five-point consensus reached on ways to tackle the political crisis riddling the country.

In the 5PC reached during a summit held in Jakarta on April 24, 2021, the ASEAN leaders called for: the immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar; constructive dialog among all parties concerned to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the people; mediation to be facilitated by an envoy of the ASEAN’s chair, with the assistance of the secretary-general; humanitarian assistance provided by ASEAN’s AHA Centre; and a visit by the special envoy and delegation to Myanmar to meet all parties concerned.
