Warning Issued to Thai Farmers to Enhance Drainage Systems for Upcoming Rainy Season

Bangkok: Ekkapap Polsue, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, has issued an urgent call to action for farmers as forecasts predict increased rainfall across Thailand from May 21-25, 2025. The directive comes after an announcement from the Meteorological Department indicating a surge in thunderstorms, particularly from May 23-25, with some areas expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mrs. Narumon Pinyosinwat, has emphasized the importance of farmers enhancing their drainage systems to mitigate potential damage to agricultural crops. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekkapab highlighted that the weather forecast for May 20-25 suggests a significant increase in rainfall across various regions. In the northern part of the country, heavy to very heavy rain is expected between May 22-25. Farmers are advised to maintain and upgrade drainage systems to ensure they are ready for use. Additionally, for harvested fruit trees, it is r ecommended to prune branches and remove fallen fruit to prevent them from becoming breeding grounds for diseases and pests. Attention is also drawn to the potential outbreak of plant diseases caused by fungi affecting field crops, fruit trees, flowers, and vegetables. The northeastern region is predicted to experience similar weather conditions from May 22-25, with heavy rain in certain areas. Mr. Ekkapab stressed the need for improved drainage systems to combat flooding in agricultural zones and urged vigilance against pests such as worms in field crops, fruit trees, and vegetables. Farmers should also inspect animal sheds for leaks and undertake immediate repairs to prevent livestock from getting wet and the barn floors from getting damp. In the central region, the forecast indicates increased rainfall, with heavy to very heavy rain expected between May 22-25. Farmers need to be wary of fungal plant diseases and pest infestations in field crops, fruit trees, and various vegetables. As with other regions, post-harvest fruit trees should be pruned, and fallen fruit collected. Aquatic animal farmers are advised to activate water pumps following rainfalls. For the eastern region, increased rainfall is anticipated between May 22-25. Farmers in low-lying areas are urged to enhance drainage systems to prevent flooding and protect against fungal plant diseases. Aquatic animal farmers should also operate water pumps after rains. The southern region, particularly the western coast, will experience heavy to very heavy rain during May 21-25. Farmers should be cautious of fungal diseases affecting crops like durian fruit rot and root rot in fruit trees. It is advised that pets be evacuated to higher, flood-free areas and that precautions be taken when sailing in the Andaman Sea.
