Varawut Insists Cambodia Must Handle Bomb Disposal at Thai-Cambodian Border

Bangkok: Warawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Social Development and Human Security and leader of the Chartthaipattana Party, has emphasized that the responsibility of bomb disposal should not fall upon the Thai military, pointing out that the explosives in question were planted by Cambodia and thus should be defused by the Cambodians. He recommended opening border checkpoints to ensure thorough inspections of individuals entering and exiting the country and urged the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security to focus on supporting vulnerable groups.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Varawut addressed concerns regarding the Thai-Cambodian border, particularly with the forthcoming opening of checkpoints in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces. He expressed significant concern about the potential influx of foreigners, especially Cambodians, stressing that this could be detrimental. Mr. Varawut also expressed surprise over the announcement of collaborative efforts to clear landmines, stating his position both as a Thai citizen and a party leader. He called for support for Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, Commander of the Second Army Region, in his work on the sensitive border area.

Mr. Varawut highlighted the identification of numerous vulnerable groups along the border and called on Ministry of Social Development and Human Security officials to bolster efforts in caring for these groups. He advocated for the development of evacuation maps, the provision of care, and the coordination with security and administrative officials to supply necessary equipment and ensure that these vulnerable populations remain in safe areas with adequate facilities.

"I still wonder why Thai soldiers had to defuse mines. We weren't the ones who laid them, so why did they have to join forces and have the Cambodian side, the ones who laid them, defuse them? Therefore, keeping the checkpoint closed to preserve sovereignty and the people is something we, the people of the Thai Development Nation, prioritize. If there's no security and no sovereignty, then a healthy economy will be of no use. I'd like to encourage the brave soldiers and sincerely hope that Thai soldiers won't be involved in demining, as it's not our business," Mr. Varawut stated.

Regarding the potential improvement of the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border, Mr. Varawut noted that changes in government and congratulatory messages from Cambodian leaders would be met with listening and belief. He emphasized that while the Thai government is open to receiving words of congratulations, actions must first be demonstrated to foster belief in peace and ensure its realization.
