Bangkok: Deputy government spokesperson announced findings from a recent Chamber of Commerce survey, indicating that tourists remain confident in Thailand's safety despite a recent earthquake. The survey suggests that the earthquake will not affect the upcoming Songkran Festival, with expectations that over 100 billion baht will circulate during the event, marking a 4.5% increase-the highest in five years. The government is enhancing safety measures at tourist attractions, as 72.1% of Thais plan to travel for Songkran.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, Deputy Government Spokesperson, shared the results of a consumer behavior survey conducted by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce. The survey projects that the Songkran Festival in 2025 will generate 134,631 million baht, up from 128,834.19 million baht in 2024. This represents the highest spending since 2020, and only 5% of respondents plan to reduce spending, the lowest since 2016. The survey reflects a strong recovery in the tourism sector, with 72.1% of participants planning to travel during Songkran, the highest rate since 2019.
Mr. Anukul noted that consumer spending behavior following the earthquake remains largely unchanged, with 74.5% indicating no change, 14.4% planning to spend more, and 11.1% intending to spend less. Regarding spending plans during the Songkran festival, 71.7% reported no change, 17.1% planned to increase spending, and 11.2% planned to spend less. Most respondents intend to continue their Songkran activities but will avoid high-rise locations for safety.
On the entrepreneurial front, post-earthquake assessments indicate business as usual. Sales at general stores, accommodation bookings, and flight schedules remain stable for both Thai and foreign tourists. Entrepreneurs anticipate increased activity during the Songkran festival, with higher sales, accommodation bookings, and spending expected due to the revived tourism atmosphere.
Mr. Anukul emphasized that the government is working to ensure safety for tourists during Songkran. Agencies are inspecting hotels, key tourist sites, and building structures in risk areas, while security and tourism agencies collaborate to maintain safety and communicate essential information to the public, ensuring a safe festival experience for all.
