Bangkok: The Minister of Tourism and Sports is preparing to discuss with the SEA Games Minister about the 'boycott' of athletes from Cambodia to compete in the SEA Games hosted by Thailand after the clashes on the Thai-Cambodian border. Mr. Surawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports, spoke about the conflict situation on the Thai-Cambodian border, which may cause problems that continue into the period when Thailand hosts the 33rd SEA Games from December 9-20.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sorawong expressed concerns over the ongoing border conflict, emphasizing the need for intervention or a potential boycott. He highlighted the risks involved, noting that it is crucial to ensure safety for both Thai and Cambodian athletes. He mentioned coordinating with the SEA Games Council President to address these concerns, acknowledging that the situation demands careful consideration due to the losses incurred.
Mr. Sorawong further stated that while five months remain until the SEA Games commence, the current circumstances necessitate allowing time for healing. He clarified that he lacks the authority to unilaterally prevent Cambodian participation, indicating that the decision rests with the SEA Games Council. He also noted the absence of communication from the Cambodian Olympics regarding the issue, though an apology letter had been sent by the Cambodian Minister of Sports for a previous logo-related incident.
