Tour Bus Crash in Chaiya District Claims Five Lives, Public Health Team Provides Emotional Support

Chaiya District: A tragic tour bus accident in Chaiya District has claimed the lives of five individuals and left approximately 30 others injured. The bus, carrying elderly tourists from Samut Sakhon Province, overturned after losing control on a curve and collided with a tree. Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene to assist the victims, transporting them to Chaiya Hospital and nearby medical facilities.

According to Thai News Agency, the accident occurred on Asia Road 41 near Pa We Intersection, just four kilometers from a separate accident site involving a pickup truck and a school van. The bus, registered in Bangkok, was on its return journey from Betong District, Yala Province, when the driver, Mr. Suthep, reportedly unfamiliar with the road, lost control. Police have begun an investigation, questioning both drivers at Chaiya Police Station to determine the exact cause of the crash.

The deceased have been identified as Mr. Somchai, Ms. Wipha, Ms. Pranee, Mr. Thanapon, and Ms. Suchada. In response to the incident, Mr. Bandal Sathirachawan, Deputy Governor of Surat Thani Province, visited the scene to oversee the care of the injured and arrange temporary shelter for the surviving passengers.

In the aftermath of the accident, the Chaiya District Public Health Office led the Mental Health Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (MCATT) to offer psychological support to the victims. Approximately 20 individuals with minor injuries are receiving care at a resort designated for temporary accommodation. Mr. Suriya Chuengchang, Chaiya District Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of addressing the mental health needs of the predominantly elderly group affected by the traumatic event.

Somkiat, a survivor aged 66, recounted the moment the accident occurred, attributing the cause to a deep groove in the road, poor visibility, and unfamiliarity with the newly constructed route. He expressed confidence in the driving skills of the bus drivers, noting their commitment to maintaining their vehicles. However, planned travels for the Chinese New Year have been postponed.

Pol. Col. Thitiwat Suthitiwanich, Superintendent of Chaiya Police Station, convened a meeting to investigate the frequent accidents in the area, which recently resulted in a total of 12 fatalities, including seven from a separate pickup truck collision. The police aim to implement enhanced safety measures for road users during the New Year festival.
