Thailand Submits Proposal for Additional Tariff Negotiations with US

Bangkok: Thailand has submitted a proposal to negotiate additional taxes with the United States, aiming to extend the negotiation deadline to August 1. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira shared that the negotiations remain ongoing and the proposals can be modified as needed.

According to Thai News Agency, the proposals sent to the US are based on the criteria previously submitted. During earlier negotiations, Thailand received feedback from the US on specific items of interest, which were subsequently reviewed and improved before resubmission. The discussions encompass tariffs and goods, along with other non-tariff related issues, which remain under US consideration. Pichai emphasized that the negotiations are not yet concluded and that further improvements could be made.

Pichai addressed questions regarding the expected tariff rate from the US, indicating that few countries have completed negotiations. The process might extend until August 1 before reaching a conclusion on the remaining countries.

In response to inquiries about Vietnam's potential zero percent tax on imports, Pichai advocated for open-mindedness and goodwill in negotiations, highlighting the importance of considering both US interests and Thai manufacturers. He also mentioned ongoing collaboration with the US on counterfeit product regulations.

When questioned about Thailand's position in the US's additional tax rate announcement, Pichai stated that further clarity would emerge in the upcoming days.
