Thailand and Laos Sign MOU to Enhance Railway Passenger Transport Techniques

Bangkok: The 'Thai-Laos' State Railways have joined forces by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop passenger transport techniques. The Prime Ministers of Thailand and Laos presided over the ceremony, and Mr. Wirit revealed that the Bangkok-Vientiane (Khamsavad) route had more than 288,700 users from July 2024 to January 2025, suggesting that it would help stimulate the economies of both countries.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, and Mr. Sonxay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, presided over the signing ceremony of the "Technical Implementation Memorandum for Rail Passenger Transport." This was between the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and the Ministry of Transport, with Mr. Viris Amrapal, Governor of the State Railway of Thailand, and Mr. Daochinda Siharad, Governor of the Lao National Railway Enterprise, witnessing the event.

Mr. Wirit stated that the signing of the Technical Memorandum of Understanding for Railway Passenger Transport between Thailand and Laos is a continuation of the long-standing and close relationship between the two neighboring countries. The agreement aims to jointly develop the rail system to connect the transportation network, support public service, and stimulate tourism. Moreover, Thailand is prepared to provide appropriate support to Lao PDR employees and facilitate the entry and exit points of the train at Nong Khai Station and Thanaleng Station. The agreement also covers the preparation of locomotives and wheels, staff for operating the passenger train, sharing revenue, complying with train regulations, providing assistance in the event of an accident, and settling accounts for the passenger train to enhance the efficiency of the rail system service.

Train travel between Thailand and Laos on the Bangkok-Vientiane (Khamsavad) route has been well-received by the public and tourists since July 2024 due to its convenience, speed, and cost-efficiency. Passenger statistics for trains 133/134 on this route from July 2024 to January 2025 indicate that 288,700 passengers have used the service, reflecting the increasing popularity of train travel. The State Railway of Thailand plans to continue developing train transportation to ensure convenience, satisfaction, and sustainable economic growth for the public.
