Thailand and Indonesia Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

Bangkok: Prime Minister Paethongtarn and President of Indonesia have announced the elevation of their nations' relations to a strategic partnership, with intentions to collaborate in areas such as public health, security, economy, and tourism. This announcement comes as Thailand prepares to host the Joint Trade Commission meeting later this year.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto made the announcement during the President's official visit to Thailand. The visit is a significant marker in the 150-year relationship between the two countries, reaffirming their strong diplomatic ties, especially as they celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

The discussions between the leaders were described as constructive, occurring in a friendly atmosphere. A key highlight was the introduction of a 'Leaders' Dialogue,' a new mechanism to facilitate regular exchanges between the nations' leaders. This dialogue reflects their commitment to strengthening cooperation on issues of mutual interest.

The strategic partnership aims to bolster cooperation across various sectors. In political and security domains, both countries agreed to enhance high-level discussions and use existing bilateral mechanisms to draft a 'Strategic Partnership Action Plan.' This plan aims to yield tangible results by the year's end, with both armies and police working closely on defense and crime suppression.

On the economic front, both leaders are keen to enhance trade, investment, and tourism. In 2024, trade between Thailand and Indonesia was valued at 18 billion US dollars. The leaders are optimistic about further growth potential, which will benefit both countries and the ASEAN region. Thailand is set to host the Joint Trade Committee meeting to explore ways to enhance this cooperation.

Both countries are also focused on mutual investment opportunities, encouraging the private sectors to explore new avenues. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Indonesia for supporting Thai businesses and urged fair treatment to ensure smooth business operations.

Food security discussions centered on reviving cooperation in agricultural trade, including the halal industry, and exploring sustainable fisheries partnerships. Energy security, particularly renewable and green energy, is also a priority.

In tourism, new flight routes have been announced between Bangkok and Indonesian cities such as Surabaya and Medan, with future plans for a Phuket-Medan route. These routes aim to boost tourism and regional connectivity, with joint marketing efforts planned.

Health and education cooperation will benefit from Thailand sharing its universal health coverage experience with Indonesia. Both nations are members of the Foreign Policy and Global Health Group, working closely under the United Nations framework.

Internationally, Thailand and Indonesia are committed to promoting ASEAN unity amid global uncertainties and fostering regional stability. They share a vision of Myanmar as a peaceful and stable country and pledged to work with Malaysia to promote peace in the region.

The visit concluded with expressions of warm friendship and hopes for future visits, as both leaders look forward to further strengthening their nations' partnership.
