Bangkok: The Weightlifting Association of Thailand has announced the names of eight promising male and female athletes set to represent the nation in the upcoming 3rd Asian Youth Games, scheduled from October 22 to 31, 2025, in Bahrain. Dr. Niwat has expressed confidence in these emerging talents despite concerns about the recent change in age group categories, which might affect their performance targets. Notably, this event will mark the first occasion where medals will be separately awarded for the snatch and clean and jerk, as opposed to a single total weight medal.
According to Thai News Agency, the Amateur Weightlifting Association of Thailand has disclosed the selection of four female and four male youth weightlifters for the games. The female competitors include Ms. Patcharapa Maenpuen in the 44-kilogram class, Ms. Panadda Promchat in the 48-kilogram class, Ms. Waraporn Phakdihan in the 53-kilogram class, and Ms. Kanitha Saetang in the 58-kilogram class. The male athletes are Mr. Natthanon Chetchai in the 56-kilogram class, Mr. Thanodom Rakchan in the 60-kilogram class, Mr. Kongla Promduangsri in the 71-kilogram class, and Mr. Chutiphon Sapphomma in the 79-kilogram class.
Dr. Niwat Limsukhnirun, who serves as the President of the ASEAN Weightlifting Federation and the manager of the Thai national youth weightlifting team, outlined that the weightlifting events will take place from October 26 to 30, 2025. The competition will feature 16 categories, equally divided between male and female athletes. This edition of the Asian Youth Games will introduce the new format of awarding medals separately for the snatch and clean and jerk disciplines.
Dr. Niwat acknowledged the competitive landscape, with strong contenders from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. He remains optimistic about the abilities of the Thai athletes but noted the challenges posed by the shift in age group from 18 to 17 years. This adjustment has reduced the preparation time for the athletes, potentially impacting their performance objectives.
