Thai Ministry of Culture Announces UNESCO Recognition of Tom Yum Goong-Kebaya as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Bangkok: The Ministry of Culture has announced an invitation for Thai citizens to celebrate the recognition of 'Tom Yum Goong-Kebaya' as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Minister Sudawan Wangsupakitchkosol shared that on December 4, Thai people can rejoice as UNESCO is set to register this cultural heritage. The announcement is part of the effort to promote Thai soft power globally. According to Thai News Agency, Minister Sudawan disclosed that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will conduct the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 3, 2024, in Asuncion, Paraguay. During the session, various countries' proposals for inscription will be reviewed and voted on. It is anticipated that Thailand's proposals for Tom Yum Goong and Kebaya (jointly proposed) will receive approval for inclusion on the 2024 Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Minister Sud awan highlighted that Thailand has previously succeeded in registering four cultural heritage items with UNESCO, including Khon, Thai massage, Nora, and the Songkran tradition. Tom Yum Kung is expected to be the fifth certified item. Kebaya, on the other hand, is a joint proposal from five countries: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The proposal, titled "Kebaya: knowledge, skills, tradition, and practices," marks it as a joint cultural heritage due to its cultural significance and role in connecting communities across different cultures in the region. To mark this significant occasion, the Ministry of Culture, through the Department of Cultural Promotion, invites the public to participate in the Tom Yum Goong and Kebaya Celebration from December 6-8, 2024, at Quartier Avenue, G Floor, EmQuartier Shopping Mall. The celebration will officially commence on December 6 at 6:00 p.m., featuring a Kebaya fashion show, a Tom Yum Goong cooking demonstration by Chef Tukata (an Iron Chef Thailand co ntestant), and free tastings of the dish. Attendees can also explore exhibitions on 'Tom Yum Goong' and 'Kebaya' embroidery, along with musical and cultural performances throughout the event. More information can be found on the Ministry of Culture's website and the Department of Cultural Promotion's Facebook page.
