Beijing: A Thai delegation, led by Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, visited Uighur individuals who were recently repatriated to China to evaluate their living conditions. The visit comes amid international scrutiny and pressure on Thailand regarding the treatment and well-being of Uighurs returned to China.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Col. Thawee expressed confidence in the Thai government’s decision to return the Uighurs, emphasizing that it was guided by international principles, legal considerations, and ethical obligations. He noted that the delegation’s observations of the Uighurs’ body language, facial expressions, and interactions with their families confirmed the correctness of the decision.
Pol. Col. Thawee highlighted the importance of respecting the rights and freedoms of individuals, recounting the experience of visiting one of the 40 Uighur men sent back in late February. He acknowledged that the previous Thai government might have hesitated to make such a decision, but he asserted that the current administration acted to ensure the individuals would not face torture or enforced disappearance. The minister expressed gratitude towards the Chinese government for its cooperation and reassurances.
During the visit, Pol. Col. Thawee noted the presence of family members and their expressions of gratitude, underscoring the significance of human dignity and the inherent value of every individual. He mentioned the possibility of using the visit’s findings to counter external pressures from influential countries, emphasizing the need to adhere to the truth and the sincerity of both the Thai and Chinese governments in handling the situation.
Addressing criticisms and skepticism about the authenticity of the visit, Pol. Col. Thawee explained that meeting the individuals in person dispelled doubts and affirmed the humane treatment they were receiving. He reiterated the Thai government’s commitment to acting in accordance with laws and ethical standards, ensuring that the individuals are treated with dignity and respect.
The delegation’s visit is seen as a step towards transparency and accountability, amidst ongoing discussions about the treatment of Uighurs and the responsibilities of countries involved in their relocation. Pol. Col. Thawee reaffirmed the Thai government’s dedication to upholding international principles and protecting human dignity in its decision-making processes.
